Narcissistic personality disorder, often known as NPD, can be described as a personality disorder where a person suffers from an vastly inflated sense of self importance. Such people think of themselves as always right and in order to hide their own faults, criticize others. The heightened confidence that they display is just a show to conceal their fragile ego. Having any narcissistic person around is a major problem, however, if the person happens to be your parent, especially your mother, the problem increases tremendously.

Dealing with a narcissistic person is not an easy task, especially when that person is your parent. Below are some tips to help you out.

Recognize her problem:

Firstly you need to recognize and accept the fact that your mother suffers from N P D. Watch out for the typical symptoms, like believing herself to be always right, a constant need for approval, criticizing you constantly, getting angry when her faults are pointed out, never accepting that she is wrong, and so on.

Understand it:

You need to be patient with you mother and find out the reason why she is narcissistic. The key usually lies in her past. Talk to her about her childhood, teenage years and so on. In most cases, a dysfunctional childhood, like too much pampering, neglect by parents or abused, may be the reasons behind it.

Gather and Protect yourself:

When dealing with a narcissistic parent, you need to set firm boundaries for yourself. How much are you willing to take from her, without getting unduly affected by it? Because a narcissistic parent often causes a child to lose confidence in him / herself , you need to be sure that you do not end up suffering from low esteem, because of her. Gather and build yourself for the battle ahead, keep reminding yourself that the fault lies not with you, it is with her.

Loose the guilty feeling:

A narcissistic mother always makes her children believe that they are the one who are at fault, never her. Usually she will try to blackmail you emotionally, make you feel guilty, and pull you down. Don't be dragged into that trap. Remember that she will always be more concerned about her own feelings than yours. Keep this in mind always, otherwise, you will be the one to suffer.

Keep Calm:

Try not to react to anything she says that disturbs you. She will constantly try to get a response from you and this is what you have to keep her from her. Don't feed her problem! You need to be assertive and even say No, when she goes overboard. Then again, becoming angry is something that you should try to avoid. She will want this and hopes you do something silly that she will later blame you for. Don't give her that chance.

Get away if you have to:

If you feel that putting up with her is becoming unbearable and you cannot continue to be by her side, without losing your self esteem or positive attitude, it is the time to move on. A narcissistic mother has a very negative effect on the personality of any child. So, before you end up losing everything that matters to you, move away from her. Don't break contact, but stop living under the same roof as her.
