If you find that there isn't one then simply say "Thank you" however if there is and it costs consider it, you may save money in the long run. Having a box of chocolate is another way to get an upgrade. While speaking to the lead attendant, ask if there is an upgrade and then mention that you are celebrating or have some extra chocolate and want to share. If there is not one then say "Thank you" and give them the chocolate, you may find yourself with an upgrade that wasn't available when you asked.

Showing up for your flight later rather than earlier can also give you a chance to get that upgrade. It is toward the end of the loading of passengers when the agents and attendants will know what seats are left open and what is not.
