How To Have A Successful Yard Sale

    View:
Most tag sales are held with the sole intention of getting rid of the unwanted clutter sitting in your garage. Known also as a garage sale or yard sale, tag sales are motivated by a number of reasons. Apart from removing unwanted possessions in order to obtain more storage space, tag sales are held in order to raise funds for charity or when the owner of the house decides to move to a new residence.

So what do you sell in a yard sale? Basically, if you have something and if you haven't used it in the last one year, sell it. If you dislike it but are keeping it because it was a gift to you, sell it. Popular items in a garage sale include sporting equipments, baby equipments, framed art, books, furniture and electrical appliances. When rummaging through your possessions, it is important to note that yard sales are recycling sales, and not your rubbish dump. It is unwise to want to sell used make-ups and lingerie. Sell items that you believe others would find useful. Items sold should be in good condition and can be used again. Clothing may not always be the best sellers, chiefly because by the time it's time for sale, it's probably out of fashion. It is also advisable not to hawk any valuable collectibles or antiques. Tag-sale shoppers are mostly bargain hunters. They are not willing to pay a high price for things which are of little value to you, especially when there are better markets for such items. For such items, an appraiser would be good and a trading assistant can help with fetching a good price for such stuff.

Things you'll need during a garage sale include waterproof posters and will not wither in rain and clear signs around the vicinity in order to direct others to where the sales will be held. That aside, always have change for money and a calculator at hand together with a notebook and pen in order to record your sales. Packing supplies such as plastic bags, boxes, bubble wrap or old newspapers will come in handy too. Should you be selling any sort of furniture or electrical appliances, then it is important to have a measuring tape for and extension cords for shoppers to measure and test them.

When setting up a yard sale, try making the items as attractive as possible. Don't leave your china set in a dusty box in a corner. Try parading it in an ideal location that will command the attention of shoppers. However, be sure to allocate a safe place for breakables. You can also group similar things together and this will save more time for the shoppers and it would be convenient for them rather than having them wade through heaps and heaps of items.

Try to involve as many family members as possible in a yard sale. After all, you will need all the hand you can get. Get the men in the family to help you to move heavy objects and load items into buyer's cars. Get the little ones to set up a lemonade stand that offer your shoppers some refreshment so they will not be wandering aimlessly around the yard.
How To Have A Successful Yard Sale
There are many great reasons for having a yard

sale. Some people have yard sales before they

move so they don't have to pack and ship

belongings they aren't using. Sometimes they are

updating the look of their home and sell their

old belongings to make money and room for the new

ones. Sometimes your children just grow like

weeds and rapidly outgrow both their clothes and

their toys. It could also simply be the desire to

purge all those items you've held onto for so

long, thinking you'd find a use for them but

never did. No matter what your reason, having a

yard sale is a relatively easy goal to achieve

and requires just a few hours of preparation and

a few more hours actually selling your wares.

You'll reap both financial and emotional rewards

from it. Getting rid of the clutter is your first

step towards attaining a feng shui life.

Decide on a date for your yard sale. Visit your

local liquor store for boxes or use heavy duty

garbage bags to put the items for your sale into.

Start by surveying the items you have. When you

are going through your house, you will need to be

brutally honest with yourself. If you haven't

used it, don't like it, don't see yourself using

it or don't know of anyone personally who could

benefit from it, then it's a yard sale item.

Sort through every dresser and kitchen drawer,

every clothes and linen closet, every cupboard

and toy box you have in your house. Don't forget

your basement, attic, pantry, entertainment

center, buffet and outdoor tool shed as well. Get

your family involved so that if an item belongs

to one of them you won't be making the decision

for them. Get their input before placing an item

in your yard sale box. Regardless of the time it

takes to sort through all your items, make the

commitment to stick with it and remind yourself

on a continual basis the monetary profit and

emotional relief you'll feel once your clutter

has been cleared from your home.

Once the sale is over, make another commitment to

yourself not to bring the unsold items back into

your home. Make arrangements with your local

charity thrift store to donate the items. Most

will be happy to make arrangements to pick up

large donations. If you don't have a local

charity who will pick up the items just use my

method and put a big "FREE" sign out at the end

of the day. You will not believe how fast those

items will disappear and it will save you a trip

to the second hand store or from being tempted to

bring the items back into the house.

Once it's all said and done, you'll have a few

extra dollars in your pocket, and can breathe an

emotional sigh of relief that the clutter that's

been weighing you down for so long has been

purged from your home. Renew your commitment to

remain organized and to combat the clutter on a

continual basis.
