1. Don't let your stress become contagious: Because stress is infectious, and your precious pal will reflect your stress. Before you greet your pet, take a few minutes to do deep breathing exercises or take a calming walk if you are experiencing high stress or anger.
2. Pay Attention: Pay attention to your pet's behavior or symptoms to recognize when your pet is feeling stressed. During your pet's next checkup, ask your veterinarian what to look for, and follow your vet's recommendations. Ignoring stress symptoms can lead to expensive ailments down the road. Be proactive.
3. Be Loving: Even in today's fast-paced, over-worked society, even a few minutes spent loving and paying attention to your pet can be so rewarding. Just as stress is contagious, so is affection. You'll have a less-stressed pet and a less stressed you. So, use some extra time each day to show him how you care for him.
4. Play: Unwind from your stressful day with a few minutes spent just playing with your pet. Combine your need to exercise with caring for your dog by taking your dog for short walks before and after work, or before and after taking your children to school or other activities.
5. Integrate: Don't think of your pet as just one more in a dozen of multi-tasking chores you face each day. Make attending one-on-one with your pet part of your schedule every day. While you are preparing a healthy meal for you and your family or friends, prepare nutritious pet food and replace your pet's water dish with fresh water. Your pet is your friend, not an obligation.
6. Delegate: Arrange for a trusted friend, family member or even pet sitter to care for your pet on days when you work late, have multiple activities or have to be away on a trip. Write down precise instructions that include emergency numbers for your veterinarian or a local pet care clinic with 24-hour availability. Anticipate stress events by preparing a to-do list if your pet becomes ill, becomes stressed or suffers from separation anxiety. Keep this data where you can get to it easily and find it easy to review and stick with.
7. Relax: There is no such thing as a "perfect" parent, and there is no such thing as the "perfect" pet owner. Don't aim to do everything; just strive to do your best. It's important to be forgiving if you haven't paid enough attention to your pet on a certain day due to your own restraints. Forgiving yourself out loud, in fact, is a wonderful stress reducer. Once you become more harmonious, that will shadow forth in your pet, and then you'll feel even better, and he will too...It's a round robin.
How To Keep Pets
The majority of people thoroughly enjoy Halloween celebrations and all the fun that go along with them. Household pets, however, may not enjoy the holiday quite as much. In fact, Halloween can be a dangerous time of year for pets if witches or Satanists in the area decide to sacrifice some unsuspecting animal. The following suggestions will help you to keep your pets happy and safe this Halloween.
* Pet black cats should be kept in the house not just on the day of Halloween itself but also on the days before the holiday. The seriousness of the situation is underscored by the fact that most animal shelters refuse to give black cats to anyone during the entire month of October because of the possible dangers. Of course, black cats are not the only pets potentially in harm's way during Halloween.
* Dogs are also better off inside the house or in some other way detained during Halloween festivities. This is because some dogs may become over excited or over protective of the home when they see trick-or-treaters waking through the neighborhood. You certainly would not want your dog to get loose and chase down some unsuspecting children.
* Be very aware of the kids treats that your pets will want to ingest. Chocolate is very toxic to dogs and cats, and the wrapping they come in won't do them any good either. No matter how nicely they sit up and beg, don't give in!
* Make sure your animal has a current ID. If you open the door and he darts out into the night, it'll make it easier on someone who finds him to give you a call.
* Pets can become very agitated when they are exposed to unfamiliar people, sounds, and sights. For that reason, a Halloween party is no place for pets. If you have such a party at the house, make sure that your pets are kept away from the goings on in a safer place.
* Alcohol is extremely dangerous for both dogs and cats. It can actually be lethal. Taking that into consideration, if you notice that someone at your party is trying to offer alcohol to your pets, it would be best to ask them to leave. Not doing so could be harmful to your pets.
Halloween can be a night of great fun, but not for pets. Make sure you do what you can to safeguard your pets for another day!
