If you are going to plant a water garden or upgrade the one you currently have, there are a few things that you have to understand before proceeding. If you are creating a new water garden, you will want to check out the different varieties available. They can be created from scratch with all the materials you need to set it up or you can purchase a water garden kit.
The kits can be added to your garden to get the look you want to attain. If you want to add statues or fountains, there are loads of pre-made ones. A waterfall will look great and your fish will love it too. Read the instructions that came with your kit so that you can set it up smoothly. If you do it correctly the first time, you will not have to dismantle it and start over because you made a mistake.
The plants you wish to put in your water garden can either be submerged plants or floating plants. Submerged plants live virtually totally in the water with leaves that may grow above the water. Water lilies are a good example of this type of plant. Normally, they are planted in a container or at the bottom of the pond, around one or two feet below the level of the water. Water lilies also create oxygen for fish in the water. Another submerged plant that many people have is the hornwart.
If you want to add floating plants to your water garden, simply put them on the top of the water. A suitable plant that floats on water is the mosquito fern. These plants are fast growing plants. Their benefits include providing shade for keeping down algae. This is mainly what they are used for other than the good looks they provide for your water garden.
The elephant ears, iris, lotus and cattails are great for putting in your pond. They are added to the pond with their container just below the water level. The peacefulness that ponds offer is worth the hard work to set one up.
The benefits of a pond are many if you look at it from a standpoint of having a place to spend time and feel at peace. Watching fish swimming from one end to the other and socializing with the visitors that will come to admire your water garden will be a delight.
If you are upgrading your water garden, consider all the various enhancements you can add that will make it stand out. Waterfalls are a nice addition. The fish love them and if you light your pond with tiny lights, the effect is very beautiful at night. Statues of your favorite nymphs, garden fairies or anything that you love are a great way to enhance your water garden and individualize it to your preferences.
The disadvantage about having a water garden is that they do attract unwanted visitors. The fish attract snakes, cats and raccoons. If you want a pond with koi or other expensive fish, you need to try to figure out a way to prevent these pests from eating your fish. Many people use goldfishes because they are cheap and good. There are some very nice breeds of goldfish that will enhance your water garden if you're on a modest budget.
How To Make A Water Garden
Digging A Hole
Making a water garden in one's back yard begins by digging a hole in the ground. When planning the dig, increasingly slope the sides to allow different plants optimal growing conditions. Some water plants flourish in deeper water and others are suited for shallower water.
Some water garden designs will begin with a shelf for plants that enjoy one foot of water or less and from that point the pond will slope to around eighteen inches and the deepest point over twenty-four inches deep. This will allow for a variety of plants to be grown in one water garden.
Choosing Pots
A water garden design should be planned similarly to a container garden because that is essentially what a water garden is. One difference is the type of pots needed for water gardens, water garden plants will do best if they are fabric pots which allow the water to flow freely around the soil and the roots.
Also even the smallest water plants will need a pot at least ten inches wide to allow the water plants room to grow. Water garden designs should figure places for pots to be placed to allow the particular plant the most sun, water depth, and soil that it needs to be healthy and thrive. Some plants will need the long "window box" type of plastic planters to allow the plant room to grow.
If fabric pots are unavailable or undesired plastic pots will also work well for water garden designs. The pots can be placed on cinderblocks while young to encourage them to grow faster and lowered slowly as the plant matures.
Choosing The Types Of Plants
There are too many beautiful water plants to talk about each in detail; however there are some general buying guidelines to follow when selecting appropriate plants for the region in which one lives. The United States is divided into ten climate zones; these zones are based on the date which there is no longer a risk of frost for that year.
Water plants labeled tropical will only do well in extremely hot conditions; they prefer the very edge of Florida, Texas, and southern California. Most other areas even in the south will not have consistent favorable temperatures for enough of the growing season.
Plants labeled hardy will grow in most areas of the United States except for extreme climates such as Alaska and a few other pockets of the country. Hardy plants are ideal for most people's water garden designs as there is a large variety of plants that can suit anyone's taste.
