First thing to do to get more free traffic is to focus on keywords. Make a keyword research to find out which related phrases have the lowest competition and then focus on these. There are some free keyword research tools available online You can use. Google for keyword research and You`ll find some. These tools will tell You how often a keyword or phrase is typed into the search engines and how many other websites are optimized for that search term.

You will find that some keywords are often typed into the engines, but have very few websites that are optimized for it. These are the keywords You should focus on. Only use keywords that are closely related to Your sites content. This way You get more quality traffic.

when You have put together a list of 5 to 10 keywords that describe Your sites Content and have a low competition You can start promoting Your site to get free hit and traffic.

We will use social bookmarking to drive traffic to Your site. Google for "social bookmarking" or "social bookmarking tool". You will find many sites like Digg, Technorati or Squidoo, on which You can list Your site and categorize it by entering tags. Tags are nothing else than the most relevant keywords that describe Your site. Use Your list of keywords as Your tags.

Whenever someone performs a search for these tags he will see a list of websites that have been entered with this Tag. As social bookmarking is becoming more and more popular You can get lots of free traffic from these sites instantly after submitting. And the visitors that will come are a targeted audience if You have entered related tags for Your site. This will lead to a high conversion rate.

But it does even get better, as You will get more free hit and traffic with this method. Many Social Bookmarking Sites are spidered by the popular search engines and their pages often rank high in the search results. This way You get a lot of high ranking, quality backlinks to Your site and this will result in Your Page being listed high too. The more social bookmarks You have, the more backlinks You`ll get and the higher Your site will rank.

Because You have focused on low competition keywords it will be relatively easy to dominate these terms in the search engines. You can use this strategy with other kind of sites as well. Do some keyword optimized forum or classified ad posting to further increase traffic to Your site. There are many forums and classified ad sites that are relevant to the search engines. Use some of the phrases from Your keyword list and You can see some of Your ads or posts in the top of the search results for that keyword.
