I recently had anexperience that reminded me how important it is to keep track of your spendingweek by week, day by day. I admittedly go through good, and not quite as goodphases in relation to how thorough I am checking all my receiptsand keeping track of our ins & outs. So I thought telling you aboutwhat I did may help remind you how important it is to be organized when itcomes to your .
I bought several itemsfrom Target (an hour from where we live), to buy the kid's birthdaypresents, among other things. I didn't check the receipt at thecheckout as I usually would, and didn't even do it at home later on. Itwas about a week later I was sorting through my handbag and purse that Ihad a closer look.
I had accidentally beencharged twice for my son's present - a building block set worth about $30. Ifit had cost only a few dollars I probably wouldn't have worried about it due tothe distance involved, but a purchase for this amount of money is significantand needed to be followed up on.
I hadn't experienced asituation like this before, as past problems involved areas such asovercharging of an item on sale, for example, which is pretty easy to prove andrectify. Nevertheless, I didn't know how I was supposed to prove I didn'tactually buy two sets at the time of purchase. This didn't put me off at leastcalling Target Customer Service to see if anything could be done. I'm certainlyglad I did!
The lady I spoke to wasvery helpful and said it would fine to come in next time I was in town, showthe receipt and they would give me the back. This is exactly whathappened when I was in town a few weeks later.
I'm so glad I didn't putit in the 'too hard basket' and assume that they wouldn't give me my moneyback. The trick was firstly noticing the discrepancy in the firstplace by checking my receipts; (albeit a bit late!), taking action immediatelyby calling directory to get the relevant phone number, and then callingright then and there.
Just a quick tip to add, always make sure when you call the customer service of any business thatyou get the name of the person you are talking to, and write down theadvice they give you. Then take that piece of paper with you, so that you canmention that you have already spoken to such and such from Customer Service andthat they said to... It speeds the process up and gives your claim instantcredibility. Also, even though a mistake has been made, remember that itcertainly isn't the fault of the employee you are speaking to, so be polite asit may help your problem being sorted out even more quickly. It pays to benice!!
I try to keep a close eye on our weekly and also keep ayearly budget with overall expected expenses to compare it to, as the year goesby, to make sure we're on track. I've learnt my lesson not to get slack withchecking receipts as I check them to prevent this sort of thing from happeningagain. If you don't, maybe you should consider it. I guarantee you will be moreconscious of how much you spend, and if it's more than you can afford it willhelp you cut back.
