How To Stale Bread

    View:
Do you often find that nobody wants to eat the heel ends of the bread in your house? Maybe you often find whole packages of bread, which you have forgotten to eat before opening a new loaf. Whichever the reason, you don't have the throw the bread out because there are plenty of uses for it. You can use stale bread in some of the best crockpot recipes, such as chicken crockpot recipes for example.

First, there are a few general uses, which can be addressed right away. If you have small bits, you can put them in the oven at a very low heat to dry them out completely and then the you can either ground up, with a meat grinder, or simply crushed with a rolling pin.

This is a very good way of making your own breadcrumbs for stuffing recipes or fried scallops without having to buy them from the store. If you have larger pieces of bread left over, you can cut them into small cubes and dry them to make croutons or cut them into small pieces for crackers. These are both very good with soup. Actually, this taste better than normal crackers and you can use fresh or stale slices to make them.

If you have hard, dry pieces of bread, heat up a well-buttered griddle and dip the bread into hot salted water before browning it quickly on both sides. This traditional dish is a great remedy for a cold morning when you realize that you only have dry bread in the house and you want to eat something with butter or syrup.

You might like to make a sandwich spread or tasty side dish with your stale bread. If you are using rye bread, put some bacon fat in the frying pan. When it is hot, you can use it to brown both sides of the bread and put a poached egg on each slice. Between the egg and the bacon fat, the bread will get moist again. You might like to serve this with barbecue sauce, catsup or another type of sauce or salsa.

If you have a lot of stale bread to work with, consider making the delicious desert, Brown Betty. You can Layer stale bread over chopped apples in a greased baking dish, starting with the bread on the bottom and continuing until the pan is full. For every layer of apple, add cinnamon and brown sugar, more if the apples are very tart, and put breadcrumbs on the top mixed with some butter. Cook covered at first and then bake for an hour, and you will find that this dish is delicious with a gentle covering of confectioner's sugar or ice cream.

As you can see from the above tips, there are various uses for stale bread from healthy crockpot recipes to a simple yet mouthwatering dessert.
How To Stale Bread
That's what I recently asked myself. Myths and legends are often based on ancient truths. So I wondered if home remedies, alternative treatments, and folklore cures might also be based on some past grain of truth. Here's what I found.

He Was No Martha Stewart

In fact, Alexander Fleming had no housekeeping skills whatsoever. During the early 1900s, Petri dishes, beakers, and test tubes were piled around his lab like dirty dishes in a bachelor's sink. That may be appropriate, because he was studying the growth of bacteria and molds. I'm sure he had no trouble getting either of those to grow in his lab. I'm not sure how he kept his experiments separate.

Cashing In On Some Bread

Fortunately, there was at least one experiment that got contaminated. He discovered that a mold growth called Penicillium (because the cells are pencil-shaped) had killed the bacteria he was culturing in one of his test dishes. The Penicillium mold is often found on bread. He was able to isolate the chemicals in the mold which killed the bacteria, which are now known as penicillins.

A Miracle Cure Is Born

The antibiotic effects of penicillin, and its cousin cephalosporin, proved to be a great aid to the medical community in fighting bacterial illnesses and diseases. Over the years these molecules have been enhanced to help them fight bacteria which had become resistant. Penicillin is still saving lives today, simply because Al Fleming was a slob. Thankfully, he was smart enough to notice his mistake and understand what it meant.

Eating moldy bread isn't going to cure your illness. Instead, you might need a shot of penicillin to fight the effects of your ill-advised snack! In this case, however, this home remedy discovery is definitely a fact.

You can find more free home remedies through the resources below. They are not the medical marvels described in this article, but they can save you medical costs and maybe some embarrassment.
