I was reading an article this week about what Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomers want in their dream home. For those born from 1978 to the present (Gen Y) a whirlpool bath and swimming pool topped the list. Gen X-ers (1965-1977) and Boomers (1946-1964) dream of things with a practical use. A state of the art kitchen and walk-in closets top both of their wish lists.
A budget of $10,000 to $40,000 can turn an existing kitchen into a dream kitchen with the addition of high end counter tops, new cabinet fronts, state of the art appliances and great decor. But fear not. I have got some great ideas for you if major kitchen upgrades do not agree with your budget.
Perk Up Your Kitchen
Installing pull out shelves in your cabinets will allow you to quickly see everything inside. Sliders under the sink will give you easy access to the trash or recycling containers. A trip to the hardware store will give you many ideas on how to make your cabinet space organized and efficient. You will be amazed at how much you find yourself appreciating this on a daily basis.
Take a look at your sink. Is it scratched, stained or just plain ugly? Update it with an extra deep sink that will make washing large dishes and pots easier. Add sparkle to the area with new faucets. Choose a style with a high gooseneck to make filling large pots easier. Once you buy the sink, a plumber will usually charge $150 - $200 to install it. Get a quote FIRST, though, before they come out.
Just Add Furniture
Play with the layout of the furniture in your kitchen to see if you have room for a small comfortable chair. It will become a favorite spot of family or friends as they keep you company while you cook. It is also a wonderful place for you to relax while they clean up after dinner. Tall chairs work here in many cases.
A Few More Tricks
Find a pretty piece of pottery or glassware to hold your spatulas, whisks etc. That eight inch bowl that you fell in love with would make a great utensil holder. Do not let your favorite pieces hide in the cabinet - find ways to use them on the countertop. If you have too many favorites and do not want clutter, rotate them every month. It is an easy change that will keep your decor fresh.
A small lamp tucked into a corner on the countertop will softly light the kitchen at night. Shop for one that has an interesting shape or shade. Be wary, though, of having it too close to spattering grease.
A favorite designer trick for adding color to the kitchen is to place tall thin floral arrangements on each side of the sink. Eighteen inch topiaries adorned with lemons or pears make perfect accent pieces. This is the kind of decorating touch that is easy and inexpensive, yet your friends will rave about your prowess.
Thank you for letting me share some of my ideas with you today. Remember to send me your favorite finds that you have turned into something special for your home. I love your creativity and I want to share it with other readers.
How To Update Kitchen
If you are looking for some ideas to redecorate your kitchen, it doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. Some minor changes that you can do on your own can really change the overall affect the room has. Many of us spend a great deal of time in the kitchen cooking, eating, and visiting with our family and friends. It is important that our kitchen has a very comfortable feeling to it. Some simple projects include adding a new kitchen sink, counters, and even bar stools.
Changing the design of your kitchen sink can change the look of any style of kitchen. There are many designs to select from so you will be able to find exactly what you are looking for. You will likely want to choose a kitchen sink that fits the space you already have designated for it. However, if you need a deeper kitchen sink or a wider one it is possible to do so by cutting away some of the counter space.
Some of the newer models of kitchen sinks feature one deep side and one shallow side. Others feature three separate compartments instead of the traditional one or two style. The type of material you choose for your kitchen sink will really influence the overall look. Choose from stainless steel, cast iron, or copper.
Probably one of the most common kitchen decorating options is redoing the counters. This can be simply redoing them in a new color and material or changing the layout of the kitchen so you have more counter space. In many open kitchens one complaint is too much space that isn't being used. To remedy this type of situation a straight counter can be turned into a T shape or an L shape to let you take advantage of some of the open spaces. You can also place an island in the middle of the kitchen to serve as a work area.
There are many different types of counter top materials you can choose from. There are also so many colors that you will definitely find one to match the overall d'cor of your kitchen area. The most common type of counter material is granite. This is very solid and it will last for years.
Adding bar stools to your kitchen area is a great way to give it some flare. It will also provide you with some additional room when you have a few too many people for your kitchen table to hold. Bar stools are available in a variety of colors so look for something to match with the flooring and the cabinets in your kitchen.
They are available in metal or wood materials and they come in a variety of styles. Many of them don't have backs but many people prefer those that do have a regular chair back on them. Look for bar stools that have a durable and comfortable seat. You also need to carefully consider the height of your counters. The bar stools need to fit under them properly and provide a comfortable reach from the sitting position to the counter area.
