Laid off and have more time on your hands than you have had in a while? A lot of people can understand what you are going through. Many of those people have been laid off after working 20 years for the same company. Some haven't spent more than a few hours a day with their wife and kids for the last fifteen or more years. At first you just lay around and rest, after all you have worked hard for a long time. You're tired. That may last about 2 weeks and then you'll start going stir crazy. You may even pace around the house looking for something to do, but not settling on anything. Shortly after that you become depressed. That won't work for very long either, so you will have to look for a few things to do to fill your time. Here are some suggestions to fill the empty hours:CampingYou might be a little leery of this one the first time the family all packs off to the nearest campground. Camping could bring back memories of those fun ?camp outs? in the army. There is more to camping than sitting at the site. Look for things to do. Hiking and fishing are easy first choices. The time spent with your children will be well worth the trip. Stroll down to the canoe area. The rental should only be a few dollars. You will be thankful for that with unemployment compensation being what it is. With the canoe rental the weekend trip should cost less than $50 for a family outing that lasts for two full days.Outdoor GamesGet the kids out, or get together with friends for a round of P.I.G on the basketball court, or a game of badminton. There is hillbilly golf, bean bags, or any number of other games that have probably been collecting dust in the garage. Layoffs are a great time to get close to your family again. Outdoor games let all of you compete in the sun. Another benefit to those of us who have spent more time indoors than out is that the sun will improve your vitamin D levels and help you to feel better overall.Ball GamesTry to go to a free ball game. These can be local sporting teams, the team your son or daughter plays on, or professional games. Many college teams do not charge admission, or the gate fee is pretty low, at their baseball and basketball games. Look for a local semi-pro football team. They usually do not charge at the gate. A ball game, sunshine, and family; what could be better?Honey-Do-ListYou are probably laughing right now. Who wants to do that? You hated to see it before you were laid off. You never had the time. Five work days plus Saturday work is enough for many of you. The honey-do list became your greatest enemy or be your best friend. After a few weeks of being laid off you may discover that it isn't too bad. You'll have time to do each project. I like to do the easiest one first, and then tackle the hardest ones. One of the secrets to getting laid off is to find things to fill your time and occupy your mind. What works for one person may not be what interests someone else. But if you look, you will find things to do at little or no cost. Hopefully, you have the luck to find things you enjoy.
