Installing a mural in your home is an excellent idea. It gives you the opportunity to express yourself artistically and to make your living environment unique and your own.
Since murals are a delicate works of art, it would be truly unfortunate to accidentally damage them.
Canvas murals are a unique piece of art, and are best left in the hands of professionals for installation and removal. Of course, it is also an option that you install it yourself, however it is not recommended.
SUPPLIES:
Professional Primer/Sizer
Heavy Duty Commercial Wallpaper Adhesive
Large Paste Brush (for smoothing)
Foam Roller (Seam Roller)
Utility Knife
Tape Measure / Pencil
Large Clean Sponge
Use the following steps for installing a canvas and you will find that it not only looks excellent, it is already prepared to move whenever the time comes to do so.
1. Make sure that everything is prepared in advance: This includes both the wall and the necessary tools for the installation process.
Remove existing wallpaper. Never install a mural over old wallpaper.
Fix cracks and holes with spackling mixture, let it dry and sand the surface until it is smooth.
2. Mark your starting point: Begin from a completely horizontal starting line.
3. Apply primer: Before the wall is ready to install a mural, you must apply a solid layer of primer. Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before spreading the glue.
4. Apply glue: The canvas size directly affects the type of glue you will use.
For smaller murals, Jade-glue is popular option.
For larger pieces of canvas, you will want to go with commercial glue that is available at many of the major hardware stores or stores that specifically carry materials for wall coverings.
Apply a solid layer of adhesive, covering the whole surface you want to cover. Take care that you do not apply a layer that is too thick.
Let it dry.
Add another coat of glue with the same proceeding steps listed above, and do not allow the adhesive to dry.
Carefully press the mural upon the wall and flatten it smoothly with your plastic tool, mindful to the frailty of the mural so as not to damage the surface by keeping a piece of craft paper between the plastic and canvas.
5. Cut borders with a utility knife: With the mural in its proper place, you can trim the extra canvas from the ceiling, baseboards molding and corners with a straightedge tool.
6. Wipe away excess paste: To remove left over glue use a clean wet sponge to gently wipe the edges of the mural at the ceiling, corners, and baseboard molding. With a soft dry towel or paper towel pad the remainder of the moisture to dry it.
For best results, I recommend the help of an assistant with the installation of a wall mural.
