Introducing Baby To Solid Foods

    View:
When your baby is ready and the doctor has given you the OK to try solid foods, pick a time of day when your baby is not tired or cranky. You want your baby to be a little hungry, but not all-out starving; you might want to let your baby breastfeed a while, or provide part of the usual bottle. Have your baby sit supported in your lap or in an upright infant seat. Infants, who sit well, usually around 6 months, can be placed in a high chair with a safety strap. Use a highchair as soon as your baby can sit easily without support. To safely use a highchair:

--Select a chair with a broad, stable base that won't tip easily.

--Use the safety straps every time you put your baby in the chair.

--Keep other children from pulling, climbing or hanging on to the highchair.

--Place the highchair a safe distance from the counter, table or any other stationary object your baby could push against forcefully enough to tip him or herself over. Give your baby enough time to finish each meal.

Most babies are full after 20 minutes of mealtime, including several minutes of exploring their food and socializing with the person feeding them. When your baby has had enough to eat, he or she will refuse the spoon with mouth closed or face turned away. Follow his or her lead, and never try to force in a few more bites.

Our medical advisors recommend that a baby's first food should be root vegetables (yams, carrots) or fruit rather than rice cereal. The first feeding may be nothing more than a little food mixed in a whole lot of liquid.

Place the spoon near your baby's lips, and let the baby smell and taste. Don't be surprised if this first spoonful is rejected. Wait a minute and try again. Most food offered to your baby at this age will end up on the baby's chin, bib, or high-chair tray. Again, this is just an introduction.

Have the right equipment a small-sized plastic baby feeding spoon does not transmit heat or cold while having a smooth edge.

Do's

--Sit baby comfortably on your lap, baby hair chair or infant seat.

--Tie a bib in place and hold baby's head gently but firmly so that a sudden turn does not result in an eye or an ear full.

--Place the spoon in the baby's mouth on top of the tongue. Remove it with an upwards motion so the food is pushed off the top gum or lip.

--Offer no more than a few drops at a time at first. And if it gets spitted back, gently retrieve it from the chin and return it to the mouth.

--If your baby is unwilling to eat after a few attempts, discard the food and begin again later with a new preparation.

Don'ts

--Never attempt to feed baby cereal from a bottle using a teat with an enlarged hole. Cereals are intended as a supplement to the normal intake of milk. Your baby does not have to consume a great quantity of solid food yet. If your baby will not take it from a spoon, simply try again later.

--Get frustrated with this process.
Introducing Baby To Solid Foods
Your child's doctor will probably recommend waiting until your baby is between 4 and 6 months old before introducing solid foods-6 months if your baby is prone to allergies. (The earlier solids are introduced, the more likely they are to cause allergies.) A baby usually cannot swallow or digest solid foods well enough to benefit from them until after 4 months of age. Until then, breast milk and formula should be your baby's only source of nutrition because they are more balanced in nutrients than any other food.

Learning to eat with a spoon may take some time. Your baby won't lose the inborn reflex to push his or her tongue outward in response to a touch until the third or fourth month of life. The child should also be old enough to sit up and turn away from offered food. If your child still sticks out his or her tongue when you offer food with a spoon, wait a couple of weeks before trying again.

At each well-child visit in the first year your doctor will advise you about introducing solid foods. Most doctors recommend giving a single-grain, iron fortified cereal, such as rice cereal, as a baby's first solid food, because babies tolerate it well. Give your baby only baby cereal for about 2 weeks to I month before introducing another kind of food. Then add one food at a time, waiting a few days to a week before offering another food, so you can see whether the new food causes a digestion problem or allergy. Don't rush the introduction of solids; your baby is still getting the most important nutrients from breast milk or formula. Here are some tips for starting your infant on solid foods:

Strap your baby into an infant seat or a high chair; it's easier to feed a baby if you have both hands free.

? Cover your baby's shoulders and chest with a large bib that has a pocket to catch any dribble. Put newspapers or a plastic mat under the high chair to make cleanup easier.

? Use a baby spoon; some come coated with nibber or plastic. Older babies may enjoy spoons specially designed for babies to grasp.

? For the first few times, give your baby a little breast milk or formula before offering solid foods. Extreme hunger may make your baby impatient and reluctant to try anything new or too frantic to settle down to eat.

? Place a small baby-spoonful of food on the middle of your child's tongue. Initially, your baby may want just a taste but will gradually accept a few small spoonfuls, eventually working up to about 2 to 3 tablespoons of each food per meal.

? End the meal when your child shows that he or she is no longer hungry by turning away from the spoon more than once. Don't worry that your child did not finish the portion of food you prepared.

After introducing cereal to your baby's diet, introduce pur'ed or strained foods-starting with fruits and vegetables at 5 or 6 months of age and strained meats at about 6 months of age. You can start meats later to minimize the risk of food allergies triggered by protein. Don't give up on vegetables if your child seems to not like them.
