These little dogs are quite low maintenance and grow to about 8 pounds but don't let their little size fool you - the Affenpinscher is a dog with a big personality and sure to fit in with any family. Sometimes called the Monkey Dog, the Affenpinscher has a long wiry coat, bit round eyes, and an undershot jaw which gives him his unusual look. Growing to around 15 inches and weight 7 to 8 pounds, this relative of the Brussels Griffon is thought to have originated from Germany where he was a much larger dog which was used on the farm and as a mouser.



Sharing qualities with the terrier breeds, the Affenpinscher is a family dog that can be playful, stubborn, mischievous and inquisitive. He can be just as happy playing with you in the living room as he is on a warm weather camping trip. He is a friendly pet that can get along good with other animals, but also has little fear and will stand up to dogs that are much larger then himself. He can be quite happy with apartment life and can get all the exercise he needs from indoor play as well as daily walks. The Affenpinscher does not need a large yard to run in all day but will enjoy the occasional run in the park.

The Affenpinscher is not a yappy dog and can be calm and quiet for the most part but will become excited and loud if he feels threatened. He loves his family and gets along well with children but can be possessive of his food and toys, so you should not leave your Affenpinscher unattended with small children. Like most small dogs, the Affenpinscher can be difficult to housebreak, but he does learn commands quickly. Although he is smart, he is also stubborn and firm and consistent training is a must but be sure to vary the training so he doesn't get bored.

The Affenpinscher doesn't have many health problems per se and is in fact one of the healthiest breeds with no genetic defects. He can have respiratory problems in hot weather and some are prone to slipped stifle and fractures. The Affenpinscher can live to 12 years with proper care.

Grooming your Affenpinscher is a breeze. He does not shed much and you do need to take care to keep his coat long as trimming it can cause problems with the coat. A weekly brushing and bathing as needed is about all you have to do to keep your dog looking good. Sometimes there may be hairs around the eyes that can be irritating and you should keep a watch out for those and remove them carefully. If you plan to show your dog, there may be special grooming considerations you will want to consult a professional with.

In order to keep your pet in the best possible condition, feeding him the proper food and making sure he has regular vet visits as well as the appropriate vaccinations, flea medication and such is important. If you do adopt an Affenpinscher, get a vet right away and start your dog on a regular program for checkups and immunizations, this is the best way to keep your dog happy and healthy!

The Affenpinscher can make a great pet for almost any type of family. This dog does not need a big yard or excessive grooming but does love to spend time with his family so be sure that your schedule allows plenty of time for taking your dog on walks, playing and just sitting on the couch!
