Isle Of Man Vacation

    View:
Scotland attracts a wide range of visitors each year, some are looking for excitement while others visit in search of peace and relaxation. There is simply so much to do in Scotland that virtually anybody can create the perfect vacation package. Sporting vacations such as skiing, golf and fishing have their main areas but outside of the main tourist attractions Scotland has much to offer. The Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Hebrides is one of the lesser known vacation destinations which offers extreme diversity.

The Hebrides are a collection of hundreds of islands which are found off the west coast of Scotland. The Hebrides are split into two distinct groups, the Inner Hebrides and the Outer Hebrides (which are also known as the Western Isles). The main, and the largest, island in the Inner Hebrides is the Isle of Skye which also attracts the largest number of visitors.

The largest and most populated island in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles is the Isle of Lewis which has some incredible scenery around the coast but the vast majority of the interior is moorland. Adjoining Lewis to the south is the Isle of Harris which is dramatic in the North, which is dominated by mountains of up to 3,000 ft, but rather more gentle to the South.

North Harris meets South Harris at a narrow isthmus where, in a steep valley, you will find the main village on Harris, Tarbert. Tarbert is also the ferry port for the main ferry to/from the Isle of Skye and, at ferry times, the village can suddenly become congested and very busy. If you plan to travel to Harris by ferry make sure that you book and arrive well in advance as at the peak of the season the ferry is often full.

Harris golf course is set in the wonderfully beautiful coast of South Harris with the most incredible views and really keen golfers will be pleased to hear that there is another course in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. Anglers will be thrilled with the number of places providing superb fly fishing opportunities for trout or salmon on the Isle of Harris.

Of course there is simply loads more to do and a great many people visit Harris to enjoy cycling. Walking is another popular way in which to enjoy yourself on the island and if you like climbing the best views are often obtained from the highest points.

Until you visit the Isle of Harris it is difficult for you to fully understand the outstanding beauty of the island. Yes you may have seen some photographs of the many spectacular beaches, you may have seen them on the television. However, until you have stood, on a hot summers day with your bare feet in the soft warm shell sand, looking out to sea, you have no idea what a genuinely moving experience it can be.

If you are planning a vacation to the Hebrides this year and are thinking of spending some time on the Isle of Harris then you need to consider what type of accommodation you will be staying in and where on the island you will base your vacation. If you plan to spend most of your time taking in the scenery and relaxing on the beach then self catering in South Harris might just be the perfect solution. However if you would not like to be bothered by such things as cooking and you would like to spend some time visiting Harris then a hotel or guest house in Tarbert may be more suitable. Whichever you choose you will find the accommodation to be of the highest quality.
Isle Of Man Vacation
What is your dream vacation? The majority of us will quickly answer, a couple of weeks taking in the sun on a sandy beach. However increasing numbers of us are choosing to go on cultural vacations. Rather than spend time relaxing in the sun more of us are finding enjoyment in experiencing different cultures and societies. The Isle of Lewis, in the Western Isles of Scotland has benefited greatly from this attitude with a marked increase in tourism to the island over the last few decades.

The Isle of Lewis is the largest, and most northerly, island of a group of islands (or archipelago) which is known collectively as the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, of Scotland in the United Kingdom. Towards the north west of the island is where you will see the most dramatic coastline where the waters of the North Atlantic ocean have pounded away at the rocks to create the most wonderfully dramatic scenery.

Towards the south west the coast becomes softer and features the most amazing shell sand beaches you are likely to see in the U.K. This area is, by far, the best looking part of Lewis as the vast majority of the inland ground is little more than a large peat bog that is flat and rather featureless.

As well as the ecologically important moorland, the beautiful beaches and fantastic north western coast the Isle of Lewis is widely known for the numerous historical sites, of which a great many are extremely important. One of the most important sites, possibly in Europe, can be found near the village of Calanais (Callanish). Here you will find the most wonderful standing stones dotted around the landscape. The main site consists of a stone circle with 8 rows of stones forming 4 avenues to create a pattern similar to a crucifix.

You can either travel to the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles by air or by ferry. Flying to Stornoway Airport, on the Isle of Lewis, is the most convenient mode of transport as the drive to the three ferry ports (Oban, Ullapool or Uig on Skye) is rather a long one through mainly country roads which can get rather congested at the height of the season.

One of the things that sets Lewis apart from the rest of the U.K. is the strong religious nature of the community. The majority of the island follow rather strict observance of the Sunday Sabbath which means that most places are closed on Sundays. Although travel to and from the islands is available it is severely restricted. With most places being closed it is important that you do sufficient shopping on the Friday or Saturday as running out of something be extremely annoying.

While staying on the Isle of Lewis it is important that you respect the Sunday Sabbath and take great care not to upset the local inhabitants. Even hanging out your washing on a Sunday can, in some areas, be considered offensive. However you will find that the islands take on a most serene atmosphere and the sounds of the Gaelic psalms can be heard coming from the many churches up to three times during the day.

The Hebridean way of life is extremely easy going and you will be amazed at how relaxing a vacation to the Isle of Lewis can be. Maybe it has something to do with the purity of the air or the fact that you are never too far from the sea but you will notice, almost immediately, the calming influence of the islands. The incredible friendliness and superb hospitality for which the islands are well known will have quite an impression on you if this is your first visit and you will find that you leave wishing to return again soon.
