I never would have thought that plastic surgery would take it a step further or rather a step downwards in the world of human perfection and body-beautiful ideal! However, as shocking as it may seem, plastic surgery has taken its medical testing further entering into the female genitalia. This is no new phenomenon and it would appear that many women have undergone the labiaplasty procedure, they just don't tell anyone about it!



Labiaplasty is a medical and cosmetic procedure, which is aimed at reducing the labia majora and/or labia minora. This is basically the outer folds of skin around the vulva, some women are born with protruding labia, whereas other women may find that this can become damaged after childbirth. It is common for women to feel sensitive about the way they look in their downstairs region and understandably this is generally done quietly. In cases of male-to-female transsexuals, the labia would be created where there was none to begin with.

However, labiaplasty has fallen under much scrutiny amongst the public and the health sector. In fact, any medical surgery related to the female or male genitalia has fallen victim of much criticism without any real evidence or arguments to back up these criticism. However, on a more serious note, labiaplasty is a controversial procedure, which perhaps is driven by the media image of a perfect body, or through the lack of essential warnings and information provided for young women looking to have this done.

The procedure is usually done in one day as an outpatient; however, the patient is put under a general anaesthetic or under a local anaesthetic with sedation if desired. Most patients and doctors prefer to keep the patient in overnight for recovery.

There are an increasing number of young women under 30 having the procedure done due to the imperfections of their genitalia. Such imperfections are in fact a part of nature, when having this procedure done one is not taking into consideration of the implications it may have on them in the end. This is especially worse for women who have not given, when they come to a point of having a baby they may face pain and complication due to the amount of scar tissue around that area.

Regardless of the arguments against the procedure, the fact remains that some women are born with larger than usual labials and this can affect every aspect of their life. This can affect the way a woman feels towards being intimate with another man, affecting her life so much that it interferes with any relationship she decides to have with any prospective partner. Other women may have had the unfortunate event seeing their genitalia change after childbirth and find that no matter how much kegel exercises they try it will not have any effect on the way it appears.

In these instances Labiaplasty maybe the only option they have into getting back that youthful tight appearance. Many women who have undergone this procedure noticed a boost in their confidence, increased sensitivity in the clitoris (meaning a heightened orgasm experience) and a much neater appearance of their vagina. Some women have in the past, complained of feeling pain during sex because of their enlarged labia.

Studies were undertaken on 163 patients who had undergone labiaplasty over a course of a nine-year period, in which 93 percent had reported with satisfactory results. It would seem that women are willing to go under the knife, not just for that 'designer vagina', but to restore what once appeared more youthful, improve their relationship with their partners and raise their confidence for a better outlook on their life.
