The following verse talks about that on one journey, Solomon's hosts of the Jinn, of the humankind, and of the birds were all retained from the first to the last until they were gathered together and they stood assembled for him as they were being arrayed, brought together in groups and marshaled.
This verse indicates that King Solomon had a unique Hosts and Army forces.
His Hosts were a collection of three different creatures, which all together were well trained and know their duty perfectly!
The verse also illustrates that Solomon's hosts were very well organized and obedient.
This is due to the fact that King Solomon was very strict and firm!
Surah (Chapter) 27:17
QARIB: we gathered to Solomon his army of jinn, humans and birds; gathered and dispersed,
SHAKIR: and his hosts of the jinn and the men and the birds were gathered to him, and they were formed into groups
PICKTHAL: and there were gathered together unto Solomon his armies of the jinn and humankind, and of the birds, and they were set in battle order;
YUSUFALI: and before Solomon were marshaled his hosts, - of jinn and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks.

Who are the Jinn?
King Solomon used to have power over the Jinn. He could see them, talk to them and command them to do stuff for him. Jinn were an essential element of the Army Force of King Solomon.
The jinn are said to be creatures with free will, created from 'smokeless fire' by Allah According to the Quran, jinn have free choice, and Satan used this freedom in front of Allah by refusing to bow to Adam when Allah commanded him to do so. By refusing to obey Allah’s order he was thrown out of the Paradise and called “Shaitan" (Satan). In the Quran, jinn are frequently mentioned and the Surah (chapter) number 72 of the Quran is called Al-Jinn (the Jinn). This chapter is entirely about them.
In general, Jinn are mentioned 36 times in the Quran.
Jinn are like human being but they are invisible creatures.
Some of the Jinn are believers and the others are unbelievers.
In fact, it is mentioned in the Quran that Muhammad was sent as the Last prophet to both “mankind and the jinn".
The jinn have communities much like human societies: they eat, marry, die, etc. They live in tribes and have boundaries. They follow religions as humans do, and follow the same ranks in armies as humans do. Jinns can settle in a vast area to a tiny hole, as they are mass less creatures and can be fit into any space they find sufficient for them. They are invisible to humans, but they can see humans. Sometimes they accidentally or deliberately come into view or into contact with humans. Jinn are believed to live much longer than humans: some of whom are said to be still alive having seen Muhammad (who lived during the 7th century), which would confirm their long life. Much like humans, jinn have learned to assimilate into the human world when they wish to do so. In many cases they live unnoticed among people marked only by the rather unusual or somewhat secretive practices they keep. They cannot breed with humans. Jinn can take on the form of humans and other animals. They can also be summoned by humans.
Humans attempting to perform black magic on humans call Jinn specializing in dirty deeds to perform the magic; such black magic on humans can only be undertaken by dark Jinn - “Ifrit" or “Marid". In many countries there are people who perform black magic (usually for cursing other people, or using jinn to influence a marriage to end it up in divorce, etc) in exchange for money. Thus, a person often pays a magician, who then calls upon dark jinn, who then performs the magic. These acts are forbidden by Islam and considered a major sin in Islamic teaching!

It is amazing that the Quran declares this unusual information about King Solomon that it is not mentioned in the Bible. Meanwhile, the Bible in 1 Kings 11:1-10 says that King Solomon loved many foreign women; He had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines! His women (1000) led him astray! And his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord and he did not keep the Lord's command!

King David King Solomon
The story of King Solomon and the ant is mentioned in chapter 27:18-19.
These two verses illustrate that: 1) The hearing power of King Solomon was unique, 2) The ants are rational creatures, 3) The ants have speech and communicate with each other, 4) The ants are very caring creatures, 5) The ants live in dwelling places and they have homes, 6) The ants live in a society, 7) The workers in the ants society are females! And 8) King Solomon had mercy and he always was observing his Lord!
Surah (Chapter) 27:18-19
18] Till, when they came (King Solomon and his unique Hosts) to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: ' o ye ants, go into your dwellings lest Solomon and hosts crush you (under foot) while they do not know. '
19] He (King Solomon) smiled, and laughed at its words, and said: ' o my lord! Grant me that I should be grateful for your blessing with which you have blessed me and my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please you: and admit me, by your grace, to the ranks of your righteous servants."
When King Solomon and his hosts came to the Valley of the Ants, an ant, who had seen Solomon's hosts, said, 'O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you while they are unaware!'
The verse indicates that the ants are likened to rational beings in their use of the latter's speech. Modern sciences support this fact; However, Scientists up to the moment do not discover and analyze the Ants' speech!
Whereat he, Solomon, smiled at the ant's words, which he had heard from about three miles away and which was carried to him as sound's waves by the winds.
The sight is that King Solomon and his hosts were going to a certain place, and then he heard the speech of the ant! The verse then indicates that the hearing power of King Solomon was unique and ultra-sharp. And remember that He heard the speech of the ant while there was a great noise of the movement of his huge and unique hosts.
This great noise of his hosts which consisted of cavalry and infantry does not prevent him from hearing the speech of an ant that was about three miles away.
When he was on the verge of [entering] the Valley of the Ants, he [King Solomon] made his hosts halt until they [the ants] had entered their dwellings. And he said, 'My Lord, inspire me to be thankful for Your grace wherewith You have favored me and my parents, and to do good that will please You, and include me, by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants', the prophets and saints.
It is very amazing that the Quran declares that:
1) The ants are rational creatures, 2) the ants have speech and communicate with each other, 3) the ants are very caring creatures, 4) the ants live in dwelling places and they have homes, 5) the ants live in a society, 6) the ants live in a society, 7) the workers in the ants society are females and 8) King Solomon had mercy and he always was observing his Lord!

King Solomon and the Ants in the Bible:
It is King Solomon in the Bible who said in Proverbs 30 that: "The ants are a people not strong". However, modern sciences say that the Ants are very strong. In comparison to a man (in respect to his size, weight, height etc.), one ant is as powerful as 30 men! There are many verses like that in the Bible that contradict with modern sciences and make the reader suspicious about who wrote the Bible. Indeed, the Lord, the Creator of the ants would not say that the ants are not strong!
Proverbs 30 (King James Version)
24) There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
25) The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
26) The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
27) The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
28) The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.
