Kitchen Cabinet Painting Ideas

    View:
The easiest way to complete this project is not to paint the inside of the cabinets . The inside is only seen when the cabinet is open so I would recommend that you leave them unpainted. Plus if you don't paint the inside of the cabinets you don't have to remove everything from inside the cabinets.

Make certain that the room you are painting the cabinets in is well ventilated because the oil based primer and paint does have a very strong odor. You may need to use a fan placed close to a door or window in order to pull some of the fumes out of the house.

Step 1. Take off all of the cabinet hardware including all knobs, handles and pulls. Cover all countertops and flooring using drop cloths or tarps. Leave the doors attached. Using painters tape, tape all the hinges on the doors.

Step 2. Clean cabinets thoroughly using a cleaning solution such as TSP. This is a cleaning agent which is readily available at most hardware stores. Wash the exterior of all the cabinets that are to be painted using your cleaning solution. Allow the cabinets to fully dry and then sand them to a dull finish using a fine grit sandpaper.

Step 3. Prime cabinets using a good oil based primer such as BIN or Zinsser primer which you can also purchase at most hardware or paint stores. Apply a thin coat of primer using a short nap roller and a brush. Prime the front of the doors first then open and prime the backs of the doors. After priming the doors, prime the remainder of the exposed cabinets. After the primer is completely dry, take your fine grit sandpaper and lightly sand the cabinets.

Step 4. Paint the cabinets using a brush and short nap roller the same way you applied the primer. You can use either oil or latex (water based) paint. The oil is going to be more difficult to apply but will be more durable than the latex. If you do use oil paint, you may need to thin the paint using paint thinner so that you can acheive a smooth finish. Be careful and do not thin the paint too much. Start out by thinning the paint a very small amount and thin more if necessary. You will also need paint thinner for cleaning up the paint and primer.

Step 5. Once the cabinets are completely dry, lightly sand any bubbles that formed in the first coat of paint using fine grit sandpaper. Do not sand so hard that you remove the paint you just put on. Apply the final coat of paint using the same technique as before. Allow the cabinets to dry at least 24 hours before reattaching the knobs and pulls.

Step 6. If you used an oil paint, clean the brush and roller sleeve using paint thinner. If you used latex paint you can use regular tap water to clean your brush and roller sleeve. If you used an inexpensive brush and roller sleeve you may want to discard them instead of trying to clean them.

Painting cabinetry can be a tedious task so just take your time and follow the steps in this article. Following these guidelines I believe you will be pleased with the outcome.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Ideas
Maintaining a house is not as easy as you think. In fact, if you try to check the different areas of your home, you can find a lot of things that need to be replaced or remodeled. The kitchen is a busy place and this is where you prepare food for your family everyday. Kitchen cabinets are used frequently and so it is not surprising that they become old and dull as the years go by. Thinking about the possible expenses of disposing all the kitchen cabinets and purchasing new ones can be very frustrating.

This is where painting options come in. Purchasing brand new kitchen cabinets costs a lot especially if you go for custom designs. It will take some time before the cabinets are delivered and not only that, there are times when the cabinets are not the way you imagined them to be. During this tough time, what can you do?

Well, don't lose hope yet because you can still save your kitchen cabinets. Check if the cabinets are still in good condition. Perhaps they only look old because the surfaces have faded already. What you need is good quality paint to change the look of your dull kitchen cabinets. In fact, you can paint every cabinet in the house that needs a new look.

Why is it that the beauty of kitchen cabinets fade easily? In the kitchen, there are usually accidents taking place like messy spills, cooking grease, and grimy hands. So as you can see, the cabinets are constantly beaten. If you're short of money or simply want to save money in remodeling the kitchen, the easiest and cheapest solution is to paint the cabinets.

But wait? you don't have to hire another person to paint the cabinets because you can also do it by yourself. Old cabinets usually made from high quality materials as compared to the new cabinets sold in the market at present, so it would be best to paint them a new look. You only have to spend on the paint, primer, and the brushes and after purchasing the materials, you can already start your painting project. Hiring a professional painter will only be an added cost so instead, do the job yourself and use the money to buy even more good quality paints.

If you cabinet has structural problems like cuts, nicks, worn surfaces, etc. you can replace the defective part. After replacing the defective part of the cabinet, it is only the time that you can start painting. Painting can really make miracles and by choosing the right shades for your kitchen cabinets, the whole kitchen will look fresh once more. Now, you can again cook to your hearts content and enjoy the new look and atmosphere in your kitchen.

You can find several manufacturers and distributors of paints in DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) so just look around and you will find them. If you live in this area, you will not find it hard to locate stores that offer good quality paints that you can use in painting your old kitchen cabinets.
