Knowing When Its Time To Walk Away

    View:
Ever since you started your new job, your boss hasn't left you alone once. You've done all of the assignments asked, but you feel like you are being micromanaged. On top of that, the other employees that you work with are constantly gossiping in the small cubicles that you all share. They're loud, the phones are always ringing, and your commute to get to work to have to put up with all of this is just short of one hour long if you're lucky. If that wasn't bad enough, you recently researched your position to find out that others in the same job position as you with the same qualifications are making nearly twice as much as you are. Perhaps, it's time to start thinking about walking away in order to seek out employment elsewhere.

In this day and age, walking away from a job isn't as easy as it might have been a few years ago before the economy took a turn for the worse. Nowadays, if someone actually lands a job, let alone an employer is looking for an employee, all ears are turned up in attention. Job security isn't what it used to be, people are losing their houses and people's credit scores are going in the toilet all because they can't afford to make their payments because everything that they save for is being used to feed them due to the fact that they lost their job.

In some studies that have been done, it has been said that the average American is only one or two paychecks away from being homeless...pretty scary statistics to think about. Today, many people (depending on the industry that you're in) can barely go to sleep at night without worrying about whether or not they'll have a job the next morning. Then again, is it really worth your sanity- your peace of mind to stay at a job that, in the long run, isn't going anywhere ? When you are at a job and it is making you unhappy, that's one thing. Most people aren't happy with their jobs; rather, they perform their jobs (reluctantly) because money is the motivating factor. We need money to exist, and as a result, many of us stick with bad job situations if it means that we will be guaranteed certain things. For example, I know of several people who are absolutely miserable at their jobs- people who absolutely dread driving to work but who do it because they now have a family to support or because the benefits that the job offers are simply unmatched anywhere else they have looked.

In some cases, you may need to walk away from your current job because it is actually causing you to lose money versus make money. For example, there was a point in time when I actually toyed with the idea of having to find a different job because money was tight and coupled with the huge increase in gas prices, I was finding that my paycheck was essentially going to cover the cost of me having to fill up my car in order to go to and from work. Fortunately, my situation changed, and I didn't have to look around. The point is, you always need to keep your options open. Don't assume for a second that just because you are the vice president of a company that you cannot be replaced or that things can't happen overnight. Know your limits. Know your financial situation. Know what you will and will not be able to tolerate so that you will know if and when it's time to start looking in another career direction.
