The lagoon itself does not cost much to build, nor to operate. No real labor is involved in maintaining the lagoons. These pumps do not need much maintenance to keep running without the need for oiling the motor and shaft.

The manure is held only for a few months, and at the proper time, the lagoon pump is put into action. It is used to pump down the lagoons when they get too full, such as after a heavy rainfall, or when they might overflow because of freezing weather. Lagoon pump are also used when the time comes to pump the treated manure onto the pasture land and on certain crops as a fertilizer. Lagoon pumps make this ecologically sound way of recycling agricultural manure possible. These pumps are also used for sump maintenance.

Vertical lineshaft turbine pumps are self-priming pumps which are used most often above the water. They are also known as centrifugal pumps. Turbine pumps are used in ponds and lakes to keep the water moving, thus preventing algae, mosquitoes, and other problems. Turbine pumps have been used in irrigation pipelines as well as to pump out shallow wells. They have also been used for pumping from bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, streams, and reservoirs. Turbine pumps are also commonly seen on ships for use as bilge pumps. They work quite well at pumping water from the bottom of the ship when needed.

Another use for the versatile turbine pump is as a water well pump that will prime itself, and as a cooling pump for such items as refrigerators and any other type of cooling device. Water supply system that are smaller than those in a good-sized city can use turbine pumps to take care of all their water pumping needs. They have also been used in the chemical industry. The tankers that are used to haul the different types of chemicals often have some liquid residue at the bottom of the tanks. Turbine pumps are used here in the capacity of bilge pumps to get all of this liquid safely out of the tanks so it can be properly disposed of.
