It can be a lot of fun to put together model trucks. When you buy one you will take it home, pull it out, and get it all together. Once you do then you might decide that you do not care for the paint job that your model truck comes with. It could be that you don't care for the decals that they have included either. If this sounds like something you have done then you might be surprised to hear that you have other options available. Believe it or not there is actually no end to the available amount of detailing that can be done. From one end of your model to the other there is no end to what you can do. It may take a bit more in parts and accessories but you can just about redesign the entire model.
Painting your model can make a world of difference in and of itself. If you want to paint your model truck one basic color then you have to decide whether or not you will need to prime your vehicle. This will allow the paint to properly adhere to your model. The use of primer can also help you to open up more options as well. By the use of either a gold or black primer then you can end up with a much deeper color. A silver or white primer will give you a very light end color. To add an extra bit of detail to your truck then you should use a fine grit sand paper. Use this to lightly rough up the outside of the body with this before you get ready to paint. This will add a textured look to your truck.
You can add everything from a bed liner to fuzzy seat covers for your model truck. If you are wanted to go with fuzzy seat covers then it is very easy. All you have to do is to take some cotton balls and whatever spray-in hair color that you want and apply them to the seat. To do this you first apply a bit of adhesive to the seat and give it time to get a bit tacky. Once it is ready you will then take the cotton ball and lightly press it across the seat. Pull it loose and you will find that you leave a bit behind each time. Once you have a good bit applied you can then trim the glued on cotton to the length you want it. You will then need to spray the seat very lightly with the hair color you have chosen. Make sure that you do it with a very light coat and only use a bit. If you use too much you will make the seats look matted.
To add a bed liner you will only need to take a few easy steps. You first need to create a bit of texture to the bed. You will need to do do this by sanding the bed with a piece of rough sandpaper. Make sure that you only rough it up and do not remove much material at all. The next thing you must do is to mask off the upper sides and the part of the tailgate that you do not want to receive the liner treatment. After you have it properly masked your next step is to spray the bed with whatever color you choose your bed liner to be. Make sure to do this in one or two passes so that you do not add so much paint that you cover up the texture. You now have a bed liner for your model truck.
With just a few little touches like this you will soon have a well detailed truck that you can be proud of.
Late Model Truck Parts
Have you ever felt that you have built several hundred model trucks? Does it feel like they are starting to get extremely boring? You have begun to customize your own models which just seemed to take a little planning and forethought. Now you are looking for a new challenge but not very sure where you should start. Well, either you can try just using your feet to put the next one together or you can attempt to design your next model from scratch. With a little creativity and enough skill to use some minor tools you will soon be able to build a truck that is all your own.
Before you can ever start building you will have to find a truck that will catch your attention. If you are trying this for the very first time then you ought to try one that does not have a great deal of detail on its outside. This will allow you a bit of practice before you tackle a big job. If you have the opportunity to do so you should try to take pictures of the truck from as many angles as you can. This will allow you to include as much detail in your model as you are able. You should also try to take measurements of the truck if you have someone who can help you do so. Try to get every measurement possible including the length, width, height, and depth of the bed. This will also help you to get everything as close to scale as possible.
After you get all your measurements you will be ready to begin your drawings. Try to rough sketch the truck but don't worry about scale. It doesn't have to be exact right now but you should try to get it close. You should also sketch some different viewpoints as well. If you do this then it will make creating your mock-up much easier. After you have sketched your model you should also draw out as many different details as you can. If you will draw each one on sketch paper you can then lay it over on the drawing of the truck so you can tell how it will look when it is finished. This will also help you make sure your scale is close to correct. If you use the sketch paper you will not mess up your original sketch and will be able to try many different looks.
The hardest decision will come once you have your design ready. For those who are rather computer literate there is the option of using CAD programs. These allow you to render a 3D model of your truck so that you can tell what it is going to look like after it is done. If you do not want to go this route then you can move on to the next step. The first thing you must do is to find a model that is similar to your truck that you are wanting to build. You can then use this as a base. You will most likely find that the parts that you need are not all there. You will have to try to find others that will work as substitutions. These may come from many different places including yard sales, old models around the house or flea markets. Once you are able to get all your parts into place you will soon find that you have created a model truck that is truly your own.
