A popular material for a variety of products is leather. Outside of the normal uses of leather such as car interiors, shoes and home decor, some manufacturers use leather for clothing. Most motorcycle clothing, including leather vests, are made from leather. There are several good pointers to caring for a leather vest to make its usefulness last if you are in the market to buy one.

Its important to protect leather with a wax or oil based protector that is water resistant. Water will stain leather almost instantly, ruining the garment. It is possible to use too much oil or wax, however. Your favorite leather vest might be damaged if the wax clogs the pores of the leather, reducing its flexibility and ability to breathe. Also, using oils that are made of animal fats, like mink oil, will darken your leather and should be avoided.

If your leather vest happens to get wet at all, the best course of action is to hang it out to dry at room temperature far removed from any heat course. After the vest dries, you can then use a leather conditioning product to help the vest regain its flexibility. You'll also probably need to wax or oil the vest as well.

When you hang your leather vest in the closet be sure to use a wide, padded hanger. This will keep your vest in the best original shape and prevent it from falling off the hanger. The leather in the vest will soak up smells so be sure to stay away from places with air fresheners, moth balls, and people smoking. It would take a long time for the vest to air out from these smells. Also, do not keep any leather clothes in plastic bags or wrap for extended periods because it is important that they are able to breathe.

If your leather vest does need to be cleaned, it is best to use plain water and a cloth on the surface of the leather. After the leather is clean, following previous instructions for taking care of wet leather will keep your vest from becoming stained. Dry cleaners also have special methods of cleaning leather items if you are not sure you can do it properly.

On average it takes a piece of leather 50 years to decompose in a landfill. If you take care of that leather, imagine how long it would take to degrade. Hopefully, your leather items will last many decades. With proper care, your leather items can be passed from generation to generation looking like it was brand new!
