If you want a gentle fabric softener that won't irritate even the most sensitive skin, use baking soda. Before adding soap to the water, add a cup of baking soda to your regular load. Then, let it stand for a few minutes. Add your regular soap afterwards. You'll be surprised how soft your clothes are.
