Locksmiths - have you ever needed one? I call locksmithing one of the professions in the ?help your community? fields of service which include doctors, lawyers, police and firemen. These are the people in our communities who we have come to depend on as being there to help us run our lives smoothly.
When I originally began looking for a good locksmith in London, I found that many owned their own businesses. The technology moves so rapidly in this field that most locksmiths need to update their skills yearly in order to keep up with the latest trends in the profession. They do yearly training, and have yearly conferences just as many of the other professionals in my self defined ?help your community? fields do.
My point here is that not only do they need to know their locksmithing skills but also need the knowledge to run a business as well as keeping up with the ever changing business climate. Starting up a company takes, in some cases, a college degree or at the very least some college level business courses. A number of security companies and home developers are hiring in-house locksmiths to handle client work and resident calls as these companies understand and respect the skills and importance of locksmiths in the grand design of things.
In the city of London where I live, there is a family owned locksmithing company that has several locations around town. I became acquainted with their services when my kids were teenagers and I purchased a second car for them to drive. As a single parent as well as a struggling young mother, I must have locked my keys in our car at least every other month. Back then, I would have to pay a friend or a local cab company to basically ruin my car door locks because I did not know that a locksmith could have done it and not made such a mess. If I had done this years earlier ? perhaps their advice would have helped me save some money in time and frustration. So with this car for my kids, I went to this family owned business and had them make each of us a key and several spares.
There is another story about me and locks - when I was a single parent. We lived in a townhouse community and I worked in the evenings so I had made sure that every window was secure and every door lock was unable to be jimmied open ? as the kids were alone.
I came home from work early one day when my kids were spending the weekend with their father. Guess what ? I didn't have a key ? I left mine on my dresser up in my room. I had no money with me nor any ID as I just always depended on the kids being home to let me in. So I had to break in ? finally ripping open and ruining one of our window screens over the kitchen sink. This was after climbing over a very high fence because I had also locked the fence gate and had no idea where that key was either. I had to break in ? to my own house.
Now, with no key or any form of ID on me ? I could not call the police department to help me, so you see the situation I was in. Plus, I was doing all this in broad daylight and was just lucky that no one called the cops. To make this whole situation even funnier ? I had just begun working as a civilian employee of the police department but my new police ID was on my dresser with my house key.
So I had to break into my own house and do it fast so I didn't get caught especially by the police department that I had just started working for. I would have a hard time proving it as well as explaining why I was climbing over fences and ripping open window screens on a house I could not prove was even mine. True story!
If I had taken advantage of the skills of a locksmith during the times mentioned above, things perhaps would have turned out differently.
Things are constantly changing. From year to year there are changes in how we lock our doors, windows and cars so that we have the secure feeling that lets us relax in our own homes. And these people in the locksmithing profession are the people we depend on to help us keep up with the changes in the field of securing our lives and property.
