It was in the year 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog was first released to the world on Sega's gaming system, Genesis. The cute modest hedgehog straight away became popular and won the hearts of the game lovers across the world. It brought much needed the freshness to the gaming world as most the gamers were bored by playing the usual side scrolling, rescue the princess kind of adventure games back then.
Being a different game was the main reason behind the popularity of Sonic the Hedgehog worldwide. It detached itself from most of the other games of the era, which were simply the repackaged versions of the older games with some new characters. The character called Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik was the main threat in the early versions of the Sonic series.
Rings were the main feature of the Sonic world. In order to gain health, rings were used instead of the "health or other such similar things. The popular attraction of the game was the rings that would simply spread out in a circle protecting you from the enemies and traps. Having a single ring in possession was enough to get out of a trap or deal with an enemy and prolong your life. If you had no protective rings and got hit, you would then lose one life. This was a totally new idea that took over the gaming world which got accustomed to health bars as life savers.
Chaos Emeralds were the other attractive feature of the Sonic series games. Acquiring these powerful gems allow gamers to use different sorts of weapons.
During the early 1990's, the common violent standard was missing in the games that feature in most the games made today. The games back then were supposed to be for fun and even if they had the guns and some violence, they didn't have the advanced graphics to back them up. Back in those days most of the games were based around adorable characters and outstanding game play. Although the graphics were not as sophisticated, games such as Sonic the Hedgehog did not need top quality graphics as the stories behind the characters were simply great.
In today's world Sonic the Hedgehog is as popular as it was in 90's. They have modified Sonic the Hedgehog in many different ways to fulfill the ever changing demands of today's gamer. New enemies have been added to the series. With the arrival of new enemies came brand new friends and allies that led to the development of new forms of the game. Features like Chaos Emeralds and others have been woven into the storyline along with some new features and characters. This allows the Sonic the Hedgehog series to be popular worldwide even today.

Sonic the Hedgehog, known as that speedy blue ball of fury, was first birthed by Sega as its "mascot" of sorts. Sega eventually saw the potential of the blue hedgehog as a hit game series and released the first installment in 1991. Sega rode on the coattails of their prodigy as Sonic soared through loops and jumps on TV screens across America and sub sequentially turning Sega into a leading video game company.
From 1991 to 1994 Sega churned out three hit titles starring Sonic and a fourth with Sonic sharing the spotlight with his pal, Knuckles. Sonic barrel rolled out of his 2d home and set foot into a lush 3D environment, in Sonic Adventures for Dreamcast, and never looked back.
Sonic's creator, Sega, decided to drop out of the hardware market in 2001 and allowed Sonic to step into the consoles of its former competitor, Nintendo. After seeing major success on the Nintendo platform, Sega decided to also allow Playstation and Xbox the privilege of selling the Sonic series. In 2006, Sonic the Hedgehog found his series in the form of a star, a part of the honorable "Walk of Game". Almost two decades and 7 console generations after its initial debut, is still going strong, with a new hit game on next-gen consoles, Xbox 360 and PS3.
