Make Your Own Bath Salts

    View:
The word aromatherapy is commonly used in conjunction with bath salts. Aromatherapy is used for relaxation by using scents which help body and mind to relax. Plants have a lot of essential oils in them that are used for scented candles, potpourri, and bath salts that are homemade. Essential oils gathered from different types of plants give the scented item a different smell. According to aromatherapy experts different types of scents trigger different emotions and responses.

When they are added to bath water scented bath oils, they can make a bubble bath an aromatic utopia. High price is a problem with many of the scented bath salts and oils which are easily available for purchase at quite a few spas and boutiques. If you make your own bath salts, you can achieve the pleasure of bath time aromatherapy without spending a fortune.

Don't be afraid to get the whole family involved when you set out to make your own bath salts. You should plan to make your own bath salts on a day when your child is having a sleep over or a birthday party. At the end of the party you can send each child home with a sample of the bath salts they made. Making your own bath salts and giving them as gifts is always an option during the holidays. People you know will be delighted after finding out that one can make your own bath salts.

To make your own bath salts you will need to do the following. Gather all of your ingredients together before you begin to make your bath salts The ingredients you need to make your own bath salts are Epsom salt, (or Dead Sea salt), a small bottle of essential oil (the scent you choose is based on personal preference), and baking soda. Your bath salts will retain the color of baking soda, but if you are interested in making more colorful salts, simply add a couple drops of your choice of food coloring. In addition to the previous items, you will need to procure jars for storing your homemade bath salts in as well.

Thankfully you'll find this recipe for making your own bath salts is simple to follow, just about as simple as preparing mac and cheese. The first step is to mix a few drops of essential oil, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 2 cups of salt. After you have mixed the ingredients together thoroughly, transfer it to a jar. Make sure to tighten the jar. Now that you have created your own blend of bath salts, you can settle into a steamy, fragrant bath full of suds.
Make Your Own Bath Salts
Ingredients Needed:

1. Baking Soda: This can be found in any grocery store or bakery supply store. You will need 1/4 cup for this recipe.

2. Citric Acid: This substance is found naturally in lemons and limes and accounts for the sour taste these fruits have. It is often used in baking to add tartness to recipes, and is also often used in vitamins and supplements. Citric acid can be found at most pharmacies or bakery supply stores. At pharmacies, you will usually need to ask the pharmacist for it since it is typically stored behind the counter, and not on the shelves. You will need 2 tablespoons for this recipe.

3. Fine Sea Salts or Epsom Salts: Natural sea salts and Epsom salts can usually be found at many grocery stores, health food stores, and other health and spa specialty stores, or gourmet specialty stores. For this recipe, a fine salt is recommended since it will dissolve more quickly in the water, although a course salt can be used as well. You will need 3/4 cup for this recipe.

4. Essential oils: These not only give your sparkling bath salts their own unique scent and flavor, they also add the benefits of the essential oil you use to your creation.

For relaxing bath, you might try a combination of lavender and chamomile. For a stress relieving bath, you might try a blend of spearmint and eucalyptus. For an invigorating bath, you might try peppermint. Pine baths are also great for sore aching muscles. You will need about 20-25 drops of your desired essential oil or oil blend for this recipe.

My personal favorite is an equal mixture of geranium, orange and ylang ylang...it's very sensual and feminine. Geranium and lemon mixed together is also a very happy uplifting scent.

Instructions:

1. Combine 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons citric acid in a glass bowl. Mix together thoroughly.

2. Add 20-25 drops of your desired essential oil blend. Mix thoroughly until no lumps remain in the mixture.

3. Add 3/4 cup of fine sea salts or Epsom salts to the mixture and blend thoroughly.

4. Pour the salt mixture into an 8 oz. decorative glass bottle or container (or several smaller containers) to store.

5. To use these bath salts, fill a bath with warm water and pour approximately 1/4 cup of the salt mixture into the filled tub. The salts will add a sparkling fizz as soon as they come in contact with the warm water. Give the water a gentle stir to help disburse the salts throughout the tub, and then get in and enjoy your naturally aromatic mineral bath! Do not ingest this mixture.

Note: Since these bath salts contain no artificial anti-caking agents, these bath salts may clump together a bit while being stored...especially in humid climates. If this happens, simply shake the bottle and the clumps should break into more of a powder again.
