When you plan to make old fashioned soap, it's important to have a good pair of gloves and some goggles on hand. Depending on the soap recipe you use, you may be dealing with some potentially dangerous substances, so you need to have the right skin and eye protection, in order to keep you safe.

Besides the basic protective gear, you also need a lot of other things to make soap, including a 15 quart steel pot, two spoons and two plastic bowls. You'll also need a mold made out of either plastic or wood, some saran wrap and a blanket. Then you'll need to pick the recipe you want to use, if you haven't already.

Lye is a key ingredient in making old fashioned soap. The trouble with lye is that it can really burn your skin if you don't watch out. So, be sure to wear protective gloves before you handle it. If you do get a lye burn, it's very much like a regular burn. If it's serious, get to a hospital. If it's only a small burn, though, you can treat it with cool water and ointments.

Lye is, of course, not the only ingredient in soap. Most of the other ingredients are things you might commonly use in cooking, like vegetable shortening and olive oil. If you want unscented soap, you'll use less ingredients than if you want scented soap, though. Scented soaps use herbs, scented oils or other ingredients that give them a pleasant smell.

Many people think that scents, such as lavender, make people feel certain moods. In the case of lavender, it's considered a calming scent. Since home made soap makes a great gift idea, you might want to research soap scents and make soap for all of your friends and relatives.

When you first start making soap, you may want to stick to the recipe exactly. Later on, though, you may want to expand your horizons a bit. You can cut your soap in fun shapes, give it interesting scents or even make it in bright colors with the right ingredients. So, don't be afraid to experiment a bit and have fun.
