Menu For Losing Weight

Aren't you tired of the emotional roller coaster of weight loss? Some days you gain weight, some days you lose weight. Some days you can follow your diet easily and other days it's the hardest thing ever. These ups and downs can cause you a lot of emotional stress. That emotional stress can then make it even harder to lose weight. It's an awful cycle to get stuck in.



There are daily obstacles that you will come in contact with that are apart of being alive, and living life. Even when we logically know what we need to do to lose weight, we are faced with events that make managing our weight and where calorie deficits don't always equal weight loss.

The stress that this causes can be a huge downside to losing weight, especially when we tend to eat more and store more fat when stress is involved. Your body reacts to stress by slowing your metabolism and increasing our cravings for high-fat and sugary foods that make sticking to your healthy eating program even more difficult.

The first thing you can do to manage your stress is to exercise, and secondly you have to change your perspective on weight loss. If your personal weight loss expectations are extremely high then you are more likely to fail from the stress those expectations will cause you. First, you must believe that you will lose weight. Once you accept that you can accomplish your goals you will believe you can accomplish them and once you believe you will start behaving in ways that make weight loss possible.

If you start thinking like the person that loses weight easily and reaches goals without great effort then you will actually become that person too. Secondly, it is very important not put so much pressure on yourself with daily ups and downs on the scale. I know that it's very tempting to want to weight yourself every day to see if you've had any weight loss. Weight loss is all about motivation in the end, but what happens if you work really hard for a week and you don't see weight loss, or even worse, the scale goes up?

Will you stop trying to lose weight and think of yourself as a failure? Will you think that weight loss isn't possible for you and that all of your hard work is wasted? The truth is, you will not always lose weight even if you are doing the right things. Gaining muscle, hormones, and body fluctuations all play a part in your weight on a daily and weekly basis. Keep this in mind and always remind yourself that you will see long term weight loss only if you stick with your eating and exercise program.

Once you lower your expectations you will discover that being too hard on yourself will only keep you overweight. Yes, there are going to be days where you eat a little too much. Yes you will probably fall into a "weight loss plateau" at some point. You know these things will happen so the important thing is to realize that and when they do happen, just keep on moving forward. If you think that people who have been successful with weight loss got that way because they never slipped up or always had consistent weight losses, you are wrong. Life happens to them too, the only difference is, is that they know how to move forward.

For most people, losing weight can be a lifelong struggle. There are many reasons for this. Sometimes people must take medication for another ailment or disease which causes an increase in hunger. Or the medication may affect the person’s metabolism, slowing it down. These reasons can cause weight loss. Other people suffer from psychological problems with food that can make weight loss impossible without counseling. These people turn to food for comfort or to fill an emotional void. In this case, eating is just a substitute for something else. Food can never fill this void so the person continues to eat in the hopes of filling this unfulfilled void. Both of these situations can lead to weight gain and even to obesity.

However, there are a few simple things you can do to help with your weight loss. The first is not to diet. That is right, do not diet! A diet is simply a short-term process which is meant for a rapid weight loss. However, this can not be sustained and after the diet is over, the person usually gains back all of their weight and more! Instead of diet, you must approach weight loss as a lifestyle change. A lifestyle change implies that this is a long-term process that takes time to implement but will have last effects. I have two friends who illustrate both points. The first, we’ll call “Lily." Lily went to L.A. Weight Loss and paid her fees for the 12 week program. She stuck to her diet and she lose 21 pounds! Great! However, after she finished her three-week program, she did not return. Slowly, the pounds came back and today, Lily is fatter than she was before she went on her diet. Contrast that with our next example. “Doug" was addicted to soda. He’d have one or two with lunch, one for an afternoon “pick-me-up", and one or two with dinner. (You’ll need a big calculator to add up all of those “empty" calories!) So, to start living a healthier life, Doug decided on a lifestyle change. He stopped drinking soda. He instead drinks unsweetened teas and water. After six months, Doug has lost (and maintained his weight loss) 50 pounds. Plus, he claims to have more energy than ever before!

If your weigh gain is due to medical reasons such as medications that increase hunger or reduce metabolism, then talk to your doctor about it. There are hundreds of new drugs that come to market every year and there may be an alternative that doesn’t have this unwanted side-effect. Or perhaps, your doctor could adjust the dose of your medication to help reduce these cravings for food or reduction in metabolism.

So, as you can see, weight loss requires an entirely new mindset. If you require medication, talk to your doctor about changing or reducing your medication. If you need to eliminate certain foods from your diet, pick one and start there. Just remember, the longest journey starts with a single step. Weight loss, and permanent weight loss, is definitely a journey worth taking.
