Asbestos became popular into use from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The popularity was insured with the domestic utility of asbestos. But the mineral can be traced down to ancient times during the Greek civilization. The name was also probably given at this time with a special indication of the mineral's properties.

The very close synonym for asbestos is inextinguishable. What made the Greeks use such a name is quite interesting. The Greeks in fact noticed that asbestos don't catch fire easily.
