Cut your hair at the full moon, say professional hair stylists. Is it a creative marketing practice or belief in the folklore of the moon phases? Ask your hairdresser at your own risk. Like any other group of people, many are fully trained in modern practice that does not include anything as un-technological as the moon phases. I mention the moon to each person who cuts my hair and I would say that the highest percentage of them have no idea what I am talking about.



The notions about hair and the moon phases go back into history. Italy has a long tradition of beliefs about the moon and hair, dating back to the Roman period when it is said that Tiberius had such a strong fear of growing bald that he would only have his barbering done during the waxing moon.

English and American folklore follow agricultural moonlore for hair cutting. While the Farmer's Almanac does not mention the full moon in relation to hair cuts, English folklore recommends cutting or trimming hair at the full moon for longer, thicker hair. France as well has a history of moon folklore for hair based on agriculture. So, turning to your cultural heritage is another source for finding your way with the moon phases. My own Lithuanian background has a strong track record of following the moon phases for agriculture. Follow the wisdom of your ancestors if they have a tradition of the moon.

Modern minds want to know why the moon works the way it does with hair. One skeptic claims that hair growth is determined by cell division rather than the gravitational effect of the moon cycle. I say, yes, precisely the point! A cell, filled with thousands of biochemical machines, is incredibly complex. Cytoplasm that fills the inside of a cell is made of water which happens to be similar to sea water. We carry our ocean with us and we stand on the earth in a continuous cyclic relationship with the sun and the moon.

Most hair salons are happy to have your business on any day of the moon cycle, but one stylist in Italy wants to preserve the old ways of the moon. A few years ago in Rome, Vittorio Giunta, fought to keep his hair salon open during the evening of the full moon. He wanted to uphold his belief that the full moon is the best time to cut hair. Unfortunately, his shop hours created a conflict with city government and other shop owners who adhere to the traditional daytime schedule.

Jeanne Valere reports in the book titled Unusual Shopping in Paris that French hairdresser Djelani Maachi also keeps his shop open during the night of the full moon. He claims that the hair will grow back faster when cut on the night of the full moon. This makes sense in relation to the growth of above-ground plant parts that occur during the time of maximum pressure exerted at the full moon.

New York has numerous salons that cater to full moon enthusiasts in the City that never sleeps, this makes perfect sense, whether it is a fancy about the full moon or simply good business sense. Free hair cuts are available if you are in Alvin, Texas, just south of Houston and it is a full moon. Stop in at Gertzen Hair World on West Willis. The owner, Kair W. Gertzen, offers free hair cuts between 8 p.m. and midnight along with refreshments and music.

The poll is closed for the issue about avoiding hair treatments during the Pisces and Cancer moons. The results remained steady throughout the polling time with the final result of 60% of those who agree and 39% who do not agree.
