The Barbet Dog is medium-sized French gun dog. It is believed that the Barbet dog was the first original water dog breed. The origin of this breed is not entirely known, but it is probably crossed with herding stock and some griffon hounds. These dogs are not well known outside of France. This breed is very capable at retrieving, and is used for waterfowl hunting and also as devoted companions.
Temperament
This breed is extremely intelligent and keen on learning. These dogs love to work, and is also eager to please their owners. You will find this breed to be very composed, flexible, submissive but at the same time lively. Some of these dogs may however be very shy. Seeing that this is a working dog, they love water and to be involved in retrieving tasks. They will also do very well as a family pet. This breed will not do well when confined to a kennel, as they will probably fade away in such an environment. It is advised that these dogs are taken for walks on a regular basis so that they can get the chance to exercise and enjoy themselves.
Care
The woolly coat of the Barbet dog has very high grooming needs. You will find that the coats of these dogs become matted fairly easy, particularly when the dogs goes into the water very often. In order for the coat to grow properly, the puppy should be shaved fully when they are between four to six months old. If the coat is shaved at regular intervals, the coat will also grow thicker. The Barbet dog should have a thick woolly coat if it is going to be used for show purposes. A coat used for these purposes should have no mats or knots. Special attention should be paid to the ears of these dogs, and hairs inside them should be removed.
Training
The Barbet is a dog that will learn very quickly. They are also very sensitive to the voice of their handlers as the dogs love to please them. It is also crucial to be consistent in the training of these dogs, as the dogs will not take a handler seriously that is no authority.
Health problems
The Barbet dog are prone to suffering from health conditions such as hip dysplasia, cataracts and skin allergies which have been seen in some of the bloodlines.

The Azawakh are originally from the Sahel region in Africa. They have been developed by the several nomadic tribes that live in the Southern Sahara, as hunting and guard dogs. You will find these dogs sleeping on the low straw roofs of their owners in the villages of Mali. If night predators such as the hyena approach, the Azawakh will jump down and start chasing them. They will quickly form a pack with the other Azawakhs and chase away or kill the impostors. These dogs are exceptionally fast when running, and can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour.
Temperament
This breed is a true pack dog, and will get along very well with other dogs they have been raised with. The Azawakh is not the ideal dog for a first time dog owner, or for homes with other animals. These dogs will get along well with children that are considerate, but should never be left unsupervised. This breed is very protective of their families and territory. The Azawakh can be war of people they do not know, but are very devoted, calm and loving toward their families. This breed possesses a lot of endurance, and they are also very gracious.
Care
The Azawakh has a smooth coat that is very easy to maintain. It can be brushed with a firm hair brush, and dry shampooed when it is deemed necessary, as this will be sufficient. A mild shampoo should be used to prevent dry skin. The Azawakh is an average shedding breed. It is also advised to check the ears and paw pads from time to time.
Training
It is advised that these dogs are socialized and trained in obedience from a very early age onwards. The Azawakh is a breed that will not do well if training is conducted in a cruel or heavy-handed manner. This dog will perform at his best if they are motivated properly, and if the training is done in a firm, fair and respectful manner.
Health problems
Azawakhs are likely to suffer from health issues such as seizures, myositis, spondylosis and auto-immune problems. This is a breed that will also not do well in colder climates.Apart from the above this is generaly a dog with good health.
