Most Popular Dog Names

    View:
Are you ready to start choosing dog names for a new puppy in your life? Dog names aren't hard to find, especially if you want to keep up with the Jones' and choose from the most popular dog names. Believe it or not, Rover and Spot aren't even on the list of the most popular dog names in the United States today.

Animal Shelter (.org) tells us that the most popular dog names these days are people names. Pet owners are shying away from naming their dogs cute names. More than half of dog owners today are choosing dog names much like they would their children's names, whereas only about one fifth are using traditional dog names like fluffy or blackie, or names that depict the dog's breed or looks. The top 10 names on Animal Shelter's list are:

For Boy Dogs

Max, Jake, Buddy, Bear, Bailey, Shadow, Sam, Lucky, Rocky, and Buster.

For Girl Dogs

Maggie, Bear, Mollie, Shadow, Lady, Sadie, Lucky, Lucy, Daisy, and Brandy.

It seems that the wonderful people at the Pet Place agree about popular dog names going to the humans (pun intended). Here are he most popular dog names according to Pet Place:

For Boy Dogs

Max, Buddy, Jake, Rocky, Bailey, Buster, Cody, Charlie, Bear, and Jack.

For Girl Dogs

Molly, Maggie, Daisy, Lucy, Sadie, Ginger, Chloe, Bailey, Sophie, and Zoe.

The New York Department of Health released the all important list of the most popular dog names, and even in a place as diverse as New York, the dog names are right on track with the rest of the country.

For Boy Dogs

Max, Jake, Buddy, Lucky, Rocky, Sam, Buster, Casey, Charlie, and Cody.

For Girl Dogs

Maggie, Molly, Lady, Daisy, Sadie, Lucy, Ginger, Chloe, Abby, and Bailey.

Of these very reliable sources for popular dog names lists, Max, Jake and Buddy top the list for boys, Maggie, Mollie and Sadie for girls. Did you find the popular dog name that you like best? I'm sure you've at least considered some of these names, but you may not be able to use them because all of your neighbors and families pets already have the best ones taken. If that is the case, you'll have to be creative and come up with your own dog names.

A few tips to finding great, but maybe not the most popular dog names are to keep the name short and easy to say, one or two syllables is best. Stay away from names that sound like commands that you will be giving your dog. Try not to rhyme your dog's name with sit, for example. Okay, maybe that's a bad example, but you get my meaning. When you think you've found a name you like, go ahead and give it a try for a day or two and see how it feels after that. If you still love it, keep it. If not, then move on to the next, but don't wait too long or your puppy will get confused. If your dog is adopted, try to keep his or her given name. The very best dog names are the ones that will have your dog come running when you call it.
Most Popular Dog Names
Dog names can actually make or break your dog's life. A dog name is as important to it as a person's name is important to the person. With the amount of love, care and dedication that dogs shower on their owner, it is only right for the owner to take some time out and decide on a good dog name. Here are some concepts you should remember while you are deciding on a dog name.

lFavorites: Does your dog has something favorite? Some food that it gobbles up immediately, some song that the dog prances around to, or even that bone that it moves around with all day! Well, you can always take a cure from the dog's favorite and name it after that. If your dog does not have any favorites, or if you cannot actually make out what its likes and dislikes are, you can name it after something that you like, like for instance coffee, cocoa, pepsi, Budweiser, the sky's the limit! These are just some of the dog names that would work perfect for your dog.

lFictional Characters: So what if you couldn't meet that person in real time, you can now have them lick your feet, literally! All of us have a favorite fictional character, like Superman, Spiderman, James Bond, Peanuts, Kitty, the whole lot. Pick and choose from any fictional character that you liked, maybe some superhero you really liked in your childhood?

lBreed and Personality: Ensure that the dog name matches the breed of the dog. This goes a long way in ensuring that you do not get snickers every time you call your rottweiller 'Cuddles' or other such names that do not match the breed. Some dogs are quite similar or remind us of real life people and substances. A dog may remind someone of a can, and can be named 'Can'. Some dogs may be sleek and stylish, so BMW or McLaren would be some good dog names for such creatures. If your dog is sporty and racy, you can name them F1 or Schumacher. All said and done, there are quite a few options for you to decide on a dog name, once you have decided to get one.

lSearch the Internet: The Internet is a haven of knowledge and information, wanted and unwanted. It is the best place to search for dog names. There are quite a few websites that inform you about the name that would be the best for your mutt. Just search on any of the search engines with the term 'Dog Names' and you will get a list of all the websites that offer you dog names.

These are just some suggestions that ensure that your dog gets a well thought after name. .
