The majority of us worry about how clean our home looks on the inside and the outside. We can spend hours every week cleaning this and that, straightening things up and organizing to keep down the clutter that can over take a busy home so easily if it is let go for very long. Having a home that looks spotlessly clean and organized is a wonderful feeling, but the affect can be completely ruined if the home has a particularly bad smelling odor that you just can not seem to track down. The family pets have accidents and almost any kid will hide a peanut butter sandwich under the sofa when he does not want to finish it. If you have a distinct musty odor that you have begun to notice, this might be something more serious than a pet accident or hidden food item. The odor that you smell because of mold is something you never want to have in your home. Mold is a serious issue and not because of the smell.

In recent years mold has been found to be one of the leading causes of allergies in the home. It can cause terrible problems for some people who are sensitive and for those with compromised immune systems. It can cause breathing difficulties in children, adults, and your pets. Mold spores can travel through the air and be easily breathed into the body. One of the tell tale signs of mold is the smell it gives off. It is unmistakable because it really does not smell like anything else.

One place in the home that is famous for having that moldy, musty, smell is a basement. Mold often grows in a basement because there is moisture in the air down there or even worse, water is coming into the basement from the outside or from a leak in the pipes. Basements that have an earthy, mold smell need to be inspected to find where the water or moisture is originating from. It should be corrected. You might even need to hire a water damage professional to come in resolve the issue for you. Your insurance should cover the cost for this. Other plumbing in the home should be inspected regularly to help prevent mold as well.
