National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

    View:
If you have some time to spend in Cincinnati you have many choices available to you. You can visit the Cincinnati Zoo, the Cincinnati Art Museum, Eden Park, Fountain Square or one of the dozens of other worthy attractions. One great attraction you should add to your list is the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. It is a great place that will entertain you while it educates you. Read on to learn a little more about this attraction.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a relative newcomer to the Cincinnati area. It opened up in a location on the banks of the Ohio river on August the 23rd of 2004. The facility cost over 100 million dollars and includes three different pavilions which celebrate courage, cooperation and perseverance. Cincinnati has a long history with the Underground Railroad. It was once a major hub on the path to freedom going from the South and leading to Canada. This museum teaches you through the use of several different exhibits. For example there is the "Suite For Freedom" exhibit. Here you can see a multimedia presentation that will show you the importance of the railroad. Another exhibit is the "Slave Pen". In this exhibit you can see an actual pen that was used to hold slaves being transported to the South for sale. The pen was recovered from a farm in Kentucky and transported to the museum. In addition to these two museums there are several others including the "Brothers of the Borderland", "From Slavery To Freedom", :The Struggle Continues" and many others. There is a lot to see at the center making it a must see attraction.

If you would like to see the center while you are in Cincinnati you can find it at 312 Elm Street. For more information you can call the information line at 513-412-6900. Have fun.
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
If you have a passion for history, particularly the history that formed and molded this great nation into what it is today, then you simply must find a way to get to The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati Ohio. Everyone knows of the era where freedom was a word only related to the white citizens of the United States and slavery was a way of life for the African American. Thanks to a select few individuals that created and operated the Underground Railroad, a route to freedom for African Americans, today the world "Freedom" relates to everyone.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center serves dual purposes. First, it is a monument to those brave individuals who risked their lives, some actually making the ultimate sacrifice, to help African Americans find their freedom and find their way home, as well as to those African Americans that were brave enough to risk all for that freedom. Secondly, it serves as an establishment to educate the citizens of today, to show them exactly what those people did on a daily basis to ultimately find freedom. It is truly an inspirational place to visit for everyone.

Of the many inspirational exhibits that you will find in the national Underground Railroad Freedom Center is that of the famed Slave Pen. This was a holding area for slaves shipped in by slave trader and Kentucky citizen John Anderson. You will not see a reproduction of this log cabin like building, but the actual building itself as it was dismantled from its original location and put back together at the Freedom Center. Over one million slaves were reputably held and transferred from this location over the years. For the African American citizen, a walk into this building will have meaning beyond description.

Then there is the inspiring From Slavery to Freedom exhibit. This is a masterfully presented exhibit of many artifacts from the initial concept of slaves to work the many southern estates and farms to the actual freedom gained after the Civil War that split the American nation in two. This is an excellent opportunity to see the actual journey from the early days of slavery to the final days, and the repercussions during these eras and thereafter.

In the end, if you have a fascination with American history, a passion for the word "freedom," or a family that needs to know that they can change the world at a moments notice, then the national Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati is a must visit location.
