Some of the recommendations include a new program to assess the safety of drugs once they are released on the market and a new system to improve communication both inside and outside the troubled agency.
According to the article written by Healthday, the FDA Commissioner, Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach, told reporters at a news conference, "The world is changing, so the FDA must change to continually achieve progress in its ability to determine the safety and effectiveness of the products we regulate. These initiatives today are not the whole story or the final chapter, but they are a major part of the story."
Despite the FDA's attempts to better the agency, many critics argue that the agency has taken on step in what seems to a marathon. There are many more issues within the FDA that need attention and haven't been addressed properly. One critic told Healthday, "The FDA's [report] includes some minor improvements, such as more sharing of safety data with other agencies, but falls dramatically short of the changes needed to overhaul the nation's drug safety system."
Hopefully this is just the beginning of many changes to be made by the FDA.
