Northern California Bass Fishing
Most of the time, bass fishing is directly associated with the southern states of the United States. However, there can be excellent catches up north during the right season, and believe it or not, California bass fishing flourishes through much of the year. Especially if you prefer fishing on foot, you'll find excellent California bass fishing in many locations. Here are some tips to California bass fishing on foot so that you can get started and enjoy a day at one of the many great locations.
The beauty of a wading fishing trip is that it is inexpensive because no boat is needed and, therefore, you don't even have to worry about the cost of fuel. There is no hiring of a guide or a shuttle for river canoeing, and you don't need anyone to go with you and hold your hand. You can have a lonely, peaceful trip to the river or stream of your choice with nothing more than your tackle box. Choose your gear wisely, though, because with the aerobic workout you'll get from California bass fishing on foot for smallmouths, you don't want to add to the difficulty factor.
Footwear is probably the most important piece of gear you can think about when you decide to go wading. Don't limit yourself to wading boots because this will put you in a position of limited access, mostly from the shoreline, and you will likely still get wet. Instead, if you are going to spend a lot of time California bass fishing on your feet, invest in a good pair of chest waders. This allows you to wade deeper into the waters and can be lightweight and cool while still keeping you completely dry. These will be especially helpful in areas where there is heavy brush along the banks and you have no choice but to wade further into the water away from the shore. You may also try hip boots, which don't give you the option to wade as deep but are comfortable and easy to walk in. Another bonus is that you can find vinyl pair for a very reasonable price, though latex and rubber are of higher quality and will last much longer.
If you don't mind getting wet, California bass fishing is a great opportunity for wet wading. Because of the warm temperatures that pervade throughout the year in much of the state, waters are easily 70 degrees and the air temperature stays at 75 degrees or greater, meaning that the temperature is comfortable from early spring through late fall, especially in southern California. Don't attempt this in shorts or sandals - heavy underwater brush will leave you scratched and scraped so that you'll never attempt this kind of fishing again! Rather, look for lightweight, fast drying long pants and boots or wading shoes with a good grip. Don't wear jeans unless you want to be wet for the rest of the day with the heavy denim stuck to your skin.
