As the pessimists scurry about, running and hiding, the optimists take this time to build stronger business foundations in anticipation of the inevitable upturn. The lending market and all related businesses are cyclical. The slower periods have to be expected and in deed relished as a time to step back and do the things relegated to the depths of your "to do" list. As I dust off my own neglected list I will share some secrets with you.
Marketing, database updating and great service, oh my! Let's talk marketing first since the greatest business owners always turn their attention to marketing during slower periods. Let me ask, when you notice those extra pounds in the wintertime, is it wise to sit around worrying, moving less and eating more? Of course it's not. In the same vein, a slower business climate is not the time to wallow in negativity and inaction. On the contrary it is the time to bump up our marketing efforts. How about contacting your current clients. You can do so by mail or email if you like but you may have better odds of hitting the lottery than to have those methods taken seriously. Remember, they are being barraged by the same methods from a slew of hungry Notaries. I recommend you pick up the phone and call your current clients. Ask how they are doing; remind them of your coverage area and experience. This brings me to my next topic, which is updating your database.
When you make calls to your current clients (mail or e-mail for my finely feather friends) it is a great time to make sure your information is up to date. Maybe you have new contact numbers or address. Possibly you've got that GLBA compliant background check or purchased a new dual tray laser printer. Maybe you have become certified or gained other experience that needs to be included in your profile? You will get more signings if your profile is complete, up to date and fully describe the service you provide.
I just said the "S" word, service. Concentrating on service is crucial but admittedly sounds so "blah". A subject you might hear at a company meeting as you fight to stay awake. Think about it in terms of economic supply and demand. In years past, Notary Signing Agents were fewer and there were more loans than you could shake a stick at (what does that mean?.. have to ask Grandpa). That meant that the Notaries had more control and more "say" in the process. Today, loans are fewer and every other person you meet is a Notary Signing Agent. My dog just got his certification. You may know him. His name is Mr. Russell, Jack. The point is, it is harder today for Notaries to maintain control and "say so". This simply means that service is one of the few things that will make you stand out. Keep the client informed of status with all the exuberance you can muster. Follow the client's procedures knowing, if you do not, the next notary will be happy to.
Never stray from what is right, honest, moral ethical and legal as a Notary. At the same time understand that as your smile is heard trough the phone, there is another smile shining twice as bright, ready to take your place. There are a lot of Notary Signing Agents with experience today so be the one that gets the calls. You need to dig deep for some of that good old-fashioned customer service. Again, ask Grandpa, he will tell you what that means.
