For most moms, working and raising children can be very daunting. But for those moms who work from home, getting their work done while preparing meals, trying to get children to take naps, cleaning and running errands can make working during the day almost impossible. Developing a strategy and a work schedule is important if you want to continue working and raise your family at the same time. The following tips can help you become more productive when working and still maintain a close connection to your children.
Determine the Number of Hours You Need to Work
Determining the number of hours you need to work each week is the first step toward creating balance in your role as working/stay-at-home mom. If you can afford to work part-time until your children are school age, do so. Even though you won't be making as much as you did before you become a mother, you will still be able to make your contribution to the working world while spending quality time with your children.
Create a Work Schedule
Creating a work schedule can be as simple as listing all the work-related tasks you need to complete in one day or during the week. Breaking your time into smaller chunks can help you stay focused, but still attend to your children when they need you. As a working mother, you need to have more flexibility in your work schedule because each day is different when raising children.
If possible, try to complete most of your work while your children are still in bed or when they are taking naps. This may mean starting your workday early, but at least you will be able to complete the tasks on your list.
Revisit your work schedule each month to see how you can make improvements. Try working during different times to see when you're the most productive. Charting your work successes in a journal is an easy way to determine your peak working hours.
Create an Office
Turning that spare room into an office is a great way to separate work and family, but also gives you a space to spread out when you need to. If you don't have a spare room, try to find a quiet space in your home where you can talk with clients, customers and others without too many distractions. Unfortunately, some people do not want to conduct business with working mothers, so you need to create a space where you can communicate freely and maintain professional relationships.
Hire a Sitter
If you need to attend periodic meetings and phone conferences or you need extra time to complete a project, hiring a sitter for a few hours each week can give you enough time to concentrate on important tasks or allow you to participate in a phone conference without being embarrassed that your children are yelling and playing in the background. When working from home, you need to be professional at all times when dealing with supervisors, clients, vendors and others you contact during the day.
There are many ways to be successful in your field by working from home to be with your children. While you can't have it all, you can find a balance that allows you to pursue work goals while raising a family.
Nursing Mother Working Mother
The home business market continues to grow, and moms seem to be taking full advantage of this explosion. It will be difficult to find a home business that will be absolutely reliable, but there are solid choices out there. Companies are actually taking advantage of the growing interest that new moms continue to show in working from home. The best advice I have for you before you start is to ask other successful work from home moms how they went about establishing a viable business from home.
Moms truly have incentive to start working from home…
I want to take some time to focus on why new mothers should consider starting a home business. The incentive for a new mother to stay home and work is definitely there; it simply gives a mother a chance to spend more time with her family while making a full-time income. There are so many other advantages that a mom has when she decides to work from home. For example, instead of hiring a nanny or paying for daycare centers to watch your children while you are at work, you can watch them yourself.
There are literally thousands of home jobs that are especially catered to stay-at-home moms. I still think the affiliate business is a great choice no matter who you are, but if you'd rather do something else, there are still many options available. Be sure to do your research (to avoid scams) and make sure it's totally for you before you confirm your decision.
Other possible options for work from home moms
Telecommunicating positions are widely a popular choice from the research I've done, but there are less and less of these positions available each day because of extreme high demand. Sales representative spots are also available, as well as telemarketer positions. If you are tech oriented, you can look into web designer openings. Some other possible choices are: scheduling and copywriting. There are tons of resources available that can help you make a decision.
Watch out for scams
Many companies do offer home positions, but there is such a demand for these positions that you have to beware of the scams that claim to give you all the things you want right way… it simply doesn't work like that.
Establishing relationships with other moms that work from home
Establish some good relationships with other work from home moms. Email them and ask questions, and if they're kind enough they'll oblige. You both already share a mutual interest, so they might respond quicker than normal. If you both have a Web site, you could even exchange links with the other mom.
It's imperative to build your relationships with people who are already where you are trying to get. Let them tell you all the benefits and cons (if any) of a mother working from home. While this may seem burdemsome, a solid business from home should take time to build. Home businesses do take somewhat of a commitment, and they should because they are "real" businesses.
Start today
We are entering a revolutionary phase in which people are starting home business more than ever before. Some people actually get a chance to leave their full-time jobs in favor of their income generating home jobs. Some would argue that a “9 to 5” is still more secure and reliable than a home business; is it really? More people are getting laid-off today than ever before. So the real question is, why shouldn't you take full advantage of the Internet access you have to start your very own business? So many useful new features and tools are available from home that we didn't have access to in years passed are here to help you.
Start up costs are so low that you owe it to yourself to at least give it a shot. Try to take advantage now while the home business movement is still in its infancy.
