We all love to go to the park, indulge in a picnic, toss around a Frisbee, and enjoy the outdoors, but what about man's four-legged best friend? Dogs certainly love the opportunity to have some fun in the sun with the whole family, and the best place to do this is at a dog park. Miami has a great selection of dog parks where your beloved pets can play, leashed or unleashed.
Dog parks are generally areas within a larger park that is specifically designated for dogs. There are three types of dog parks: dog friendly parks, where dogs must be leashed; dog parks, where dogs can roam freely; and dog run parks, where dogs can exercise their muscles. If you want to be able to let your pet run freely, you should make your way to one of Miami's four designated dog parks.
The Amelia Earhart Dog Park is five acres of fun for your dog. Paved walkways allow you to get around the park without having to travel through grass that may or may not have ?surprises? left behind by other dogs. There are plenty of benches for you to rest on after a weary day of tossing tennis balls, and specially designed drinking and spray fountains lets everyone cool off with some water. This dog park is located at 401 E 65th St. in Hialeah.
The Northeast Regional Dog Park at East Reynolds Park is a popular 1.76 acre stretch of land that sees a lot of use by dog owners in the area. Divided into two sections, one for larger dogs and one for smaller dogs, the park has fencing, landscaping, walkways, and shade structures that will allow you to keep out of the sun. Water fountains and waste dispensers are great conveniences.
Many other parks in Miami, such as Acadia Park, Kings Meadow Park, and Rockdale Park, have dog parks within them so there are a lot of options available. So grab your furry, four-legged best friend and head on out to a dog park for a day of fun.
Off Leash Dog Parks
Any very thin leash of any material will cut into your hands if you have to use any force on it (and sooner or later you will). Make sure it is of good leather or solid webbing, with a loop, big enough to get your hand through and firmly stitched at the other end from the snap.
The snap is important too. There are two good kinds, one with a sliding rod at the side of the snap held firmly in place by a spring, and one which has two curved metal hooks which slide along side each other to make a secure catch for the ring of the collar. Avoid completely the fancier snaps you will see on some leashes, especially the kind that comes apart at the tip of the snap and is held together by a spring.
Six feet is exactly the right length for a leash, regardless of the size of you or the dog. In fact, some city ordinances require leashing at all times in public, and that the leash shall be no longer than six feet. Do not waste money on anything longer at present with the idea of giving him a little more freedom, as you and he will get all tangled up in it. The longer canvas leashes you may see in pet stores are for tracking, where considerable length is required.
The new retractable leashes are perfect for small and medium size dogs. The nylon lead is rolled up and housed in a casing that you can hold. Most brands are available in six foot lengths by a one ? button braking and locking mechanism. This is intended as a general guide to help you make a logical selection, with an strong emphasis on quality and strength above all else.
