Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is one of the top tourist attractions in Greece. In the 20th century, Corfu participated, with the rest of Greece, in the two World Wars and suffered great damage to the city. The Ionian Academy, the Library and the Municipal Theatre were burnt and totally destroyed in these wars.



The first two weeks of May can offer you deserted beaches and quiet Tavernas as the tourists have not arrivaled. Flowers in abundance and a fresh looking Corfu.

In several parts of the old city you may find houses from the Venetian times. The old city architecture is strongly influenced by the Venetian style as it was under Venetian occupation for a long time. The small and ancient side streets and the style of the old buildings with their trademark Venetian arches are strongly reminiscent of Venice.

Corfu town has so many shops selling leather goods jewellery, olive wood objects, and hand made needle work that it is impossible to single out any one or another.

The city is famous for its rich and lively night life. The capital offers a variety of bars and cafes proposing various kind of music, suitable for every ones taste. In Corfu known as Kerkyra Town, the most popular places to go are the cafes on the Liston Promenade or the cafes on the north end of Splianada Square. The cafes are open from morning to late night. Bars and cafes can also be found on the main roads through out the city. There are several night spots along the coast to the north, between Corfu town and the beach resort of Gouvia. Restaurants and taverns serving delicious local delicacies are every where around.

Many swimmers and sun bathers go to the safe blue flag beach of Benitses, situated close to Corfu Town. It is one of the most popular Corfu beaches, strewn with shingle and sand. The beach and its surrounding area are very well organized and have water sports and boat hire facilities, piers, taverns, fast food restaurants, cafes bars, and an abundance of hotel resorts, hotels, apartments, studios and rooms.

The most notable sight in the town is probably the Old Fortress by the sea, which was once the site of the Temple of Hera. The Old Fortress stands over the Esplanade Spianada Square and has a fixed iron bridge 60 meters in length. This bridge used to be wooden and was drawn up to isolate the fortress for greater safety.
