Organic Food In India

    View:
Approximately 30 years ago, India enthusiastically cuddled to the tools and techniques of Green Revolution. Dams and irrigation projects were accomplished to reduce the reliance on monsoon and enable the farmers yield more than one crop per year. Though, the benefits derived from Green Revolution can’t be ruled out. There were some unnecessary side effects also that became more apparent in the past few years. Hence, organic farming was the next option that Indian farmers preferred to go with.

The beginning of the new millennium marked a rapid boost in organic farming in India, as the government had realized the great income potential of organic food export by then. The other factor to push the growth of organic food production was its cost-effectiveness as compared to modern farming. Unlike modern farming, organic farming requires fairly lesser investment in equipments and chemicals.

As per a recent research report named, “Food Processing Market in India (2005)" published by RNCOS, “Around 53% of organic food produced in India is exported, whereas merely 2.5% population of India consumes the organically grown food. The reason being the moderately higher cost of organic food, as it costs around 25% more". As per experts, "Sole dependence on organic food can’t fulfill the food requirement of the masses. To avoid food shortage we ought to take both the organic as well as modern farming together".

As per experts, “The export of organic food and value added agricultural produce should further grow in the years to come. Thus, enabling the food processing industry in India to earn more revenue".

Various government support programs to support the growth of Indian food industry are discussed in this report. The report also provides a comprehensive analysis of the current trends and future prospects of the food processing market in India. Profiles of the key players in this sector, legal framework and regulations governing the food industry in India and also the challenges and opportunities before the Indian organic food business make this report a must read for both the investors as well as the industrialists.

Organic Food In India
Just a few years ago, organic food in Singapore used to be unheard of and had an infamous reputation for being indifferent from traditional foods. However, ever since the major epidemics that had happened in the world including Sars and the avian flu, people are starting to look for alternative health food to supplement their diets because they believe it can boost their immunity system.

Hence, organic food is now making inroads rapidly in Singapore and has even extended its reach to heartland areas. It used to be only large super markets have an organic food corner but nowadays, even the small supermarkets in the suburbs stock a wide range of both locally grown Singapore organic food and imported organic foodstuffs too.

Although the prices of organic food has not come down much throughout the years compared to some of the other more common food supplies, it still does not deter most people from trying an organic product or two. These people, although they make up a small group in compared to the general population, they are very loyal to the organic brands that they consume. In fact, the total revenue from these group of people can support the 50 organic food stores in Singapore. An approximate spending figure on the organic food market in Singapore is around $6 million to $10 million dollars annually.

The market of organic food in Singapore are both accepted widely by both the young and the old in Singapore. A survey found out that the younger crowd consisting of professionals, managers, entrepreneurs and young business people consume organic food regularly. They usually buy large quantities of oat and organic brown rice to supplement their typical asian diet of rice. Some of the organic food stores in Singapore are finding it hard to keep their organic food in stock even, because the demand for such organic food is high. Many of these people perceived receiving health benefits and an improved immune system from drinking organic fruit juice and eating organic foodstuffs.

Traditionally, organic food in Singapore are imported from Australia, New Zealand and the United States, with the U.S being the major exporter and bringing in the bulk of organic food into Singapore. However, due to the increasing demand for a wider range of organic products, neighbouring countries like Thailand and Malaysia have commited themselves to be future sources of organic products which are coming in to Singapore.

With the recent government master plan of attracting more foreign talents into Singapore, more and more foreign talents are forming a sizeable expatriate community here. These large expatriate communities made up mostly of Western and Japanese professionals and their families also purchase organic products on a regular basis.

Singapore is becoming one the most important markets for organic food. However, as a whole, the market for organic food in Singapore is still growing but its set to increase dramatically in the coming few years.
