Every year thousands of young people leave further education and head into the world of work. While some people seem to have their career perfectly mapped out, it's never been the case that everyone's known exactly what they wanted to do. Some people get easy going jobs, head off traveling or take time to decide what they would like to be doing for the next few years. Consider time out

Some people are raring to go after they've finished seventeen years of formal education, but some want to enjoy the world while they still can. There's no real rush for a twenty one year old to head straight into the rat race, and it's often a good choice to take time out after the years of education and go traveling. It could be on a long holiday, world tour, or some volunteering to help your career prospects.

Have high hopes, but don't expect them Straight Away

Getting your degree might mean the world to you, but you'll find that not that many employers will be quite as delighted. After all, if you have a degree in an Arts subject such as History or English, how many jobs offer you the opportunity to use the skills that you've learnt at university? The answer is very few, as most jobs are vocational. You may need to get professional qualifications to reach specialist employment such as accountancy, law or journalism, all of which can be very competitive. Bare this in mind while applying; otherwise you may end up disappointed.

Internships and Unpaid Work

Some industries are more difficult to crack than others. Certainly, if you've got a high demand qualification such as Engineering, then you've got a better chance of getting a related job straightaway. If you want to get into other areas that are highly competitive, such as law, film and TV or charity work, then you may have to consider doing some unpaid work to ?get your foot in the door.? Although you won't be earning big bucks straight away by doing an internship, it does give you a great chance to at least test the water in your chosen industry and decide if it's really for you.

Make Use of the Internet

One of the biggest helpers of graduate job seekers in recent years has been the Internet. Not only are jobs portals such as Reed.co.uk making the search for jobs easier through constantly improving their services, there's also plenty of chances opened up by social networking too. Even on Facebook there are plenty of groups and industry professionals willing to lend you advice or help you get into an industry. Just type in your search and away you go!
