Panic attacks are difficult to treat because they are more related to thoughts and feelings rather than the physical aspects of our lives. Treatment for panic attacks includes psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of the two as seen fit by your doctor. However, the effectiveness of the treatment is dependent on your own determination and willpower. Do not wait or hesitate to ask anything regarding any concern you might have. Be frank and open with your doctors so that they can mould the treatment for panic attacks to suit your particular case.
It is important to remember that the treatment for panic attacks can take a long time depending on many factors. Some people have been known to respond within a week's time while others require long-term treatment that can take up to several months. That is why you must be patient with your own treatment and not expect results overnight. Conversely, if you experience no change after 7-8 weeks, talk to your doctor and get the treatment for panic attacks altered to something different.
If you are taking medication as part of the treatment for panic attacks then you must remember that most such medications will involve some variety of side effects and you must discuss these with your doctor so that you know you are not experiencing something that you are not supposed to. It would be even better if you can speak to your doctor about possible side effects before starting any medication so that you are prepared for them. Some side effects can be intolerable in some people and an open discussion with the doctor might lead to a reduction in dose or a change in the medication itself.
