Parts Of A Military Sword

    View:
A weapon used by the military during the old days, such as military sword, has undergone a major evolution on its design, weight and the thickness of the blade. Above anything else it is very important to know the basic parts of a military sword and their corresponding functions in order to appreciate its beauty.

When looking on military swords displayed on a store, the first thing you notice is the blade. Basically, there are two types of blades: straight and curved. The blade's design may vary in to a straight edge or a curve edge. It depends on what specific time the sword was designed. For curved blades, examples will be a rapier and saber, they are sometimes called backswords. Almost all the military swords that you seen or military gifts given to a military person, the edge is usually straight, it is seldom that you see a curved edge of the blade. The blades of the swords came in different styles for different purposes. The curved styles of the blades of the backswords are for the sole purpose of quick slicing motion. It has been observed that curved styles of blades are better than straight styles of blade for its ability for a quick slicing motion.

Located on the blade of the sword is a fuller, a groove that will start from the hilt down to the sword's blade. The length would vary according to the design or specifications of the owner. There is a channel created by the groove from the hilt down to the blade. The channel serves as to decrease the weight of the sword and giving it a sharp and strong cutting surface. The strong area of the blade is located near to the hilt and the area near to the tip is the weak area. There are some military swords that have this dull area that serves as a resting place for your fingers. Not all military swords have these three areas, but all of them have the strong and weak area.

The main part of the sword where you lay your fingers and to hold a grip of the sword is the hilt. Every military sword has a hilt. A hilt comes in different shapes and sizes to suit every hand. There is a new improvement of hilts too; some swords have a guarded hilt that will protect the hands of the user when there is an incoming blow from the enemy. The military swords do have hilts which is the collective term to all the parts that allows the handle and control of the sword's blade. The hilt is consists of a pommel, grip, and a guard. The guard is located near to the blade of the sword and a pommel which has usually round located at the tip of the hilt. There is this middle area located between the guard and the pommel. This middle area is called a grip. The grip's size will depend whether the user will use only one hand or two hands in holding it.

Now, you know the parts of a military sword, and then it will be much easier for you to determine if the price of the sword is reasonable within the scope of its design and ability to serve its purpose. The next time you shop for a military sword, you already have an idea what are you looking in terms of design, weight and other features.
