I have seen many women come in for breast augmentation consults that are initially dead set against silicone breast implants and want saline implants, only to change their minds once they have accurate information. In talking to patients over the past two years, here are some of the most common myths surrounding silicone gel breast implants.
1) SILICONE BREAST IMPLANTS CAN CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS AND MAKE ME SICK. Large numbers of breast implant women have been studied and it has been concluded that they do not cause autoimmune disease. The fear that silicone breast implants causes health problem has been extensively studied and dismissed. The FDA has allowed silicone implants to be released back for human implantation primarily for this reason. Silicone breast implants are one of the most extensively studied medical devices in the history of mankind. Yes it is true that there have been a very small number of women with silicone breast implants that developed autoimmune diseases but the actual rate of this occurrence is no greater than that of women who have never had breast implants. Women of the ages 20 to 45, which is the primary age for breast augmentation surgery, have the highest rates of autoimmune diseases.(ages 20 -45) So it would not be unexpected that the two will occasionally occur in the same patient. But autoimmune diseases are not cased by silicone breast implants.
2) IF THE SILCINE BREAST IMPLANT RUPTURES, IT WILL SPREAD THROUGHOUT MY BODY. Today's silicone gel implants are much more like jello than any liquid. The silicone particles are gelled together so that they move as sticky mass, not flowing like a liquid. As a result, if the implant suffered a large tear, the mass of silicone simply sits there. If you squeeze on a silicone implant that has been cut with scissors, you will see that it comes bulging out of the tear only to be retracted back into the implant when the pressure is removed. Checmiaclly, we all have silicone particles throughout our bodies in microscopic amounts due to a lifetime of exposure to that element. But women with silicone breast implants today have not been shown to have substantially higher levels than those who don't have implants.
3) SILICONE BREAST IMPLANTS BECOME HARD OVER TIME. When a breast with an indwelling implant becomes hard, it is known as capsular contracture. While not well understood, the natural scar tissue around a breast implant may thicken and get hard over time. In days gone by with old-style silicone implants, which were placed above the chest muscle, capsular contracture was common. The reasons were that small amounts of silicone leaked (known as implant 'bleed') through the implant lining and the body reacted by forming more scar tissue. In today's breast augmentation surgery, the combination of newer silicone implants which have very negligible amounts of bleeding and the implant being typically placed under the muscle, have reduced the lifelong risk of capsular contracture significantly. While that risk always exists, and it is higher when placed above the chest muscle, the occurrence of capsular contracture is not common.

With this technique, hundreds of pea-sized implants are inserted into the chest, rather than one large one. These tiny implants are composed of a silicone material that is similar to that found in conventional materials, but the micro implants stick together and stay put in the normal region of fatty breast tissues.
The traditional enlargement procedure includes making large incisions underneath the breast, around the nipple or through the armpit. Depending on the type and size of prosthesis, these incision lines can be two inches or longer in length.
Silicone implants are placed inside with all the fluid already inside, but salines are inserted in a deflated state and the saline is pumped in until the size is right. The placement of the implants can be over or under the pectoral muscles depending on preferences and the body type of the patient. The recovery process can take several weeks, including some minor or considerable discomfort, swelling, and bruising.
With the new proposed micro breast augmentation technique, the incision lines could be as small as 5 mm long, making them virtually invisible if they are made in the natural crease under the breast. The tiny materials could be inserted through the micro hole, until the desired size is achieved. The smaller scar and more gradual increase of the tissue could make the recovery process less painful and quicker.
One of the main advertised benefits of micro implants is a more natural-looking chest. Some saline or silicone prostheses can look very ball-like in certain cases, but many tiny ones would be able to move and shift along with the normal movements of the body, allowing them to be shaped into the natural form of the breasts.
The press release said that a research study performed about the possible implication of the new technology found that it would be very popular with women without adding any more to the operation's price tag. An added benefit would be that repeat enlargement sessions would be easier.
These types of surgeries are very common today as women want a bigger size after the healing process is complete and the prosthesis settles into position. With the micro implants, the same tiny incision could easily be opened and more could just be injected to fill out the breast shape.
Still, conventional saline and silicone implants are the only Food and Drug Administration-approved breast augmentation options today and they remain safe and effective as a whole for women desiring a fuller bosom.
Patients achieve greatest satisfaction with the results of their surgery when they closely collaborate with their surgeons, confiding all their concerns and expectations. An experienced and qualified plastic surgeon will be able to inform the patient of the best available techniques as well as the limits and risks.
