Keeping physically fit and active on a daily basis is beneficial for everyone, whether young or older. From our own experience we know that an active lifestyle enhances the quality of life, energizing and revitalizing considerably no matter at what age. is a must if they are to enjoy their lives to the full.
Older adults that lose the ability to do normal, every day activities on their own, doesn't have to mean that it's due to their age. Very likely it's due to inactivity over a longer period of time.
Seniors who are just starting with an exercise program, should absolutely first consult with their physician. This is and important aspect from a safety perspective. Since a physician knows the medical background their patients, he or she is the best and most reliable source to consult with on which activities are best and the appropriate level of intensity to include in the exercise plan.
A physician can provide expert advice suitable for the patients needs, as well as assisting with any exercise program modifications where necessary and would be able to monitor the progress of that program on an ongoing basis and make adjustments along the way. It's possible that the physician would also be well informed of exercise programs in the area and could advise on this too.
The main points to consider for staying healthy, active and independent include: strength, endurance, balance, optimal posture, flexibility, maximum capacity for movement and producing more energy. It's important to remember that everyone is unique and therefore individual needs and levels of ability will vary, which is especially true of older adults.
A good starting point is to look for activities that you enjoy. Program options can include the following:
1. weight - resistance training
2. cardiovascular machine work i.e. treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent and upright stationary bikes, recumbent step machines
3. walking out in the fresh air is always enjoyable or you could look into walking at an indoor track
4. yoga and stretch classes or pilates - which should be supervised
Younger members of the family could also help to keep the older adults active by walking with them or another suitable activity - there's hundreds of ways. It's so much fun to be with older adults, they have so many good stories to tell.
Take the initiative to set realistic goals and find the best exercise activities to suit your needs. Exercising is fun and beneficial at any age and is so important to the quality of life.
Physical Fitness For Children
With the epidemic of overweight people and even children, children and fitness training has become an important topic of interest. While it may not take that much to get children into shape, children and fitness training is something that should be looked at. Just remember that children have tons of natural energy and it's just a matter of honing it so they get the right amount of exercise.
One thing to keep in mind before you consider children and fitness training is how they eat. This can be the number one problem that a child is not in shape. They get so used to grabbing cookies and chips for a snack instead of an apple or granola bar. Get your children to start replacing unhealthy snacks with healthier ones and they will start becoming healthier almost immediately. This will also help any fitness training to work better for them.
Children and fitness training doesn't necessarily need to be a complete workout like an adult would have. In fact children love to play naturally and can lose a lot of weight just by running around in the yard for an hour. This is probably the best way for children to get a good workout. Have them run around, jump rope, ride a bicycle, roller skate or any number of things that they find fun. That is very important, make sure the children are having fun, so they don't give up on it or get bored with it. That way they are more likely to do it on a regular basis, which is needed in order to lose weight and stay healthy. Find something that your child particularly likes to do and encourage them to do it every day or at least a few times a week.
Another good thing when it comes to children and fitness training are dance classes. These are especially good for little girls as they get to socialize with friends and lose weight at the same time. This can be great encouragement if it is something they enjoy. Boys might be encouraged to try a little league baseball team or peewee football team. This gives them the same option of hanging out with kids their own age and still loses weight or get healthy. By encouraging as much fun while getting healthy, you will be more likely to get your children to keep doing what is good for them.
By getting children and fitness training started at an early age, you are building habits that will last a lifetime. The most important aspect is to get them to realize that keeping healthy can be fun. Doing so now can help them live a healthy life for the rest of their lives.
