Picture Of San Francisco
San Francisco's Tenderloin District has a bad reputation. Though it is located near the downtown area, it is often tagged as a rough part of town. True, it is a bit rough around the edges, but not nearly as dangerous as similar inner city neighborhoods in other large cities. That said, it is best to exercise caution when visiting this area of the city after dark.
At the same time, Tenderloin is only now experiencing the gentrification that has already taken place in most other neighborhoods in and around Downtown San Francisco. The bars in the area are not pretentious and the ethnic eateries offer cheap and delicious eating options.
(The name ?Tenderloin comes from the district's shape ? like a cross section of the famous cut of beef).
Some streets in the neighborhood are quite rough, while others are quite quiet and safe. There is a strip of Vietnamese markets and restaurants on Larkin and Hyde Streets. The restaurants offer tasty and authentic Vietnamese fare for reasonable prices (by San Francisco, the prices are ridiculously cheap). On the outskirts of the neighborhood are similarly cheap Indian restaurants. This area, centered on Taylor St., is affectionately known as Tandoor-loin (a reference to the Indian-style of cooking).
The area of the neighborhood nearest to Nob Hill is known for its unpretentious bars and music venues. These are not the sleek establishments of other parts of downtown San Fran, but they offer a welcome change of pace for those seeking a good, cheap night on the town with plenty of interesting and colorful characters.
There are nicer, more upscale bars along the downtown edge of Tenderloin. This area shows that gentrification is slowly taking hold in this formerly rough part of town. It will take some time before Tenderloin loses its personality and gives way completely to upscale and hip nightspots.
