There are a lot of products out there that are made for the maintenance of hot tubs, and it can be confusing to try to find which ones people should use in what situations. However, the maintenance of the parts of your hot tub is critical to maintain clear, clean water.



Water quality depends on the addition of some chemicals and the operation of the cleaning parts of the device. Having properly working filters is the first line of defense against infectious germs and contaminants that can really make people sick. The water often can get cloudy, and owners will often try to add more and more chemicals to the water, until at that point it is now all of the chemicals that are making people sick. Adding tons of chemicals also puts the hot tubs pumps under tremendous stress, so they will wear out much quicker than they should, costing the owner more money quickly.

A good rule of thumb for cleaning and maintaining spa filter cartridges is to clean them every two to three weeks and soak them in a filter cartridge cleaner every eight weeks or so. Although many filters claim to last for 12 months, dont assume that they will. Very much of that time frame depends on different factors such as how well they are maintained, how often the hot tub is used, and more.

If you have the kind of spa filters that have the pleated cartridges, those should be rinsed thoroughly every other week, or more often if you use the hot tub a lot. You can use a garden hose (do not use a pressure washer) to dislodge the foreign particles by spraying the water in between each pleat. There are also some products that can be found that will help with this. Every other month or so, your cartridge should be pre rinsed and soaked overnight. This should always be done along with a water change.

If your water is often hard, youll probably need to use a product that prevents scale build up or removes it if it is already an issue. Be sure to always follow the package directions to avoid injury to you and damage to your hot tub. Scale can build up not only in the tub itself, usually forming a nasty ring around the walls, but it will build up in the pipes, the jets, and the spa filter cartridges as well. There are pre filters that can be purchased for the hose pipe of the tub, so that may be something to investigate for you. The pre filter removes harmful particles and substances before they ever reach your hot tub.

Cleaning products should always and only be used for the purposes that they were designed for. Failure to do this can really cause injury to you (chemicals are always hazardous to work with) but they can also damage parts of your tub. Never use a pressure washer to clean your spa filter cartridges because they are too powerful and will damage them.
