Known as the “acne pill”, the most prescribed drug for acne has been touted by medical scientists from Bath University as mind-altering. Produced by a large multinational company, the acne pill first gained popularity in the late nineties when people were looking for other methods of treating acne. People who did not really trust topical creams found the acne pill a soothing presence.



But unfortunately now, the Bath University study proved that the acne pill was inducing clinical depression in the individuals who used them. Produced by a Swiss multinational company, the acne pill is now being scrutinized for other side effects. Eventually, this might lead to the acne pill being banned from other countries because of its adverse and potentially life altering side effects.

Clinical depression has never been a joke. If one is clinically depressed, one swings between alternating and unstable poles: one pole for euphoria and the other pole for extreme depression. When this happens, a person's mindset is unstable and the person becomes more vulnerable.

If stressors are added to the picture, the person is more likely to turn to destructive means to bring back the equilibrium. Suicide is one of the effects of clinical depression, and it has already been documented that some users of the acne pill committed it after taking the medication for acne.

This bleak picture should serve as a warning for anyone who might be thinking that prescription medications are always safe. Truth be told, every type of medication has its side effects, no matter how small or insignificant. The important thing to note here is that the side effects are there. This makes the decision to take medication that much more vital and decisive.

Danger at Every Turn?

It seems that for acne sufferers everywhere, there are no clear routes to take. Every type of medication for acne has been bashed one time or another as unsafe. The newer ones, which came about because of the rising need for a more competitive anti-acne market, have not been FDA approved in the United States, and some are just downright dangerous, such as chemical skin peelers.

In the end, it really is up to us to decide whether pursuing an oral medication would be worth it, given the fact that the acne pill has probable side effects. What would be a safer route, in times like this?

Topical medication seems to have less side effects, and if these medications do have side effects, the damage would be limited to the outside regions of the human body, and not inside, where the damage would be much more harder to reach and much more harder to detect.

It seems that skin problems have to be treated where you can see the skin the most- outside, where you can touch the skin and see whether the medication is working or not. Now, if you still prefer oral remedies, ask your doctor if you have something else aside from the acne pill or if you are not comfortable in taking it.
