Preparing For Another Flooded Basement

    View:
Waters have resided and a swimming pool has been bestowed upon you for free. This seems like a great deal until you consider it's in the basement of your house. Do not despair, for the damage is only superficial and might be able to be replaced. However, recovering from a flooded basement once may not be good enough in the long run. Chances are if you are living in an area that is prone to flooding, there might very well be another attack just on the horizon. Are you going to be prepared?

There are some things that can be done to safeguard against another flooded basement incident. One of them starts on the outside of the home. If there are any windows and doors from the outside, consider getting them filled with cement. You might lose some function and light, but the valuables will be drier than before. Light problems can be solved by installing some lights on the inside. If the door from the outside is the only door, this may not be a good option. In any case, you would still want to make sure that the seals are properly maintained.

Another step to reduce the chances of a flooded basement is to make sure that water doesn't have a chance to get in there in the first place. This may seem like a very easy thing to say, but not necessarily do. If you know that a flood is coming, sandbags are commonly used to set up a barricade to hope that water will just flow right on past. This works very well if the flood is very slight. The more distance that you can put between the water and the valuables, the better.

If you are still worried about getting another flooded basement, then lets change some things in the basement itself. A good way to safe guard items in the case of a small flood in the basement, like a leak or very slight flood waters, is to keep the stuff off of the floor. This serves two purposes. The first is to decrease the chances of things getting wet by physically lifting them out of the way. Six to eight inches of space may just do the trick to keep those items dry in the event of another flooded basement. The other purpose is by using narrow legs, as opposed to bricks and wood, the water has more room to collect without filling up the space very quickly. Think of a glass of ice. The cup is filled and pouring in a little bit of water seems like a lot. Same concept is applied here.

While you are still using the lifting technique, utilize waterproof storage containers. Things that can be easily damaged by water would benefit from being in a plastic storage container that can be closed shut. Put these on the bottom of the racks and everything else on top. This would have to be a large amount of water that would have to be in the flooded basement in order to damage many of the items.

There are some cases in which nothing can be done and the flood waters are consuming homes at a large rate. At these times, there really isn't anything that can be done to prevent water from getting inside the basement. When this happens, there really isn't anything left of the house and community either. These small steps can help in a big way to prevent much damage from being done to a basement later on. Try some or try them all, any little bit helps when it comes to combating another flooded basement.
