Anaerobic?without oxygen. Anerobic exercises require your body to function beyond its aerobic capacity and use alternate, non-oxygen pathways to burn fuel. Anaerobic exercise can only be performed for short periods of time, and is usually alternated with rest periods or aerobic activity. Anaerobic activities build muscle strength and increase glycogen reserves.

Body Composition?the amounts of various types of tissue in the body, including muscle, fat, bone and water.

Body Mass Index (BMI)?a ratio that indicates the percentage of an individual's body weight that is fat. Usual measures of BMI may not be accurate in exceptionally fit individuals.

Calorie'a unit of measurement of energy. Generally speaking, we use the term to refer to the energy in food or to energy used during activity.

Carbohydrate?one of the three macronutrients. Carbohydrates supply energy.

Cool down'a period of slower-paced exercise following an aerobic workout, usually lasting 5-15 minutes. It allows the body to gradually return to its pre-exercise state.

Dehydration?loss of body water. Loss of body water during exercise is usually due to sweating and increased respiration, and inadequate fluid replacement.

Duration?the time length of an exercise session; how long it lasts.

Endurance?your ability to exercise for a period of time without undue fatigue. Sometimes broken out into muscle endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance.

Fat?one of the three macronutrients. There are several kinds of fats; some are healthy and some are not.

Fitness?the ability to perform activities without excessive fatigue. The components of fitness are cardiovascular fitness (ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the muscles), muscle strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Flexibility?the ability of joints and their corresponding muscles to bend and stretch.

Glycogen'a carbohydrate that serves as short-term energy storage. Glycogen is primarily found in muscles and the liver.

Hydration?the amount of water in your body. Adults are 40-60 and 70% of your maximum heart rate.

Warm up'a period of 5-15 minutes prior to aerobic exercise where you gradually increase the rate of exercise to allow muscles to warm up.

It may be strange advice to tell someone who needs to get in shape to buy a Wii. The funny thing, though,is that this is now good advice. With the Wii Fit game available, exercise can be fun. This game has sold over five million units, and it's no wonder. Combining health tracking, aerobics, Yoga, and strength training capabilities, it truly is more than a game.

Necessary to perform its weight measurements, is the Wii Balance Board. This is the hardware unit sold in conjunction with the Wii Fit software component. It resembles a house scale and is used to measure various statistics. These include center of gravity, weight, and body mass index. Wii Fit Balance Boards in the United States can hold people up to 330 pounds.

You can use the information gathered on the Balance Board in conjunction with the Wii Fit software to keep track of your health. This system is the Wii Fitness Age. It uses your age, weight, and athletic ability to determine your fitness "age," or ranking. The great thing about the Wii Fit is that your personal health information can be secured from other users via a pin number.

One unique feature of the Wii Fit game is the 3-D demo. If you need assistance in learning a particular move, the option of a virtual trainer is available. You can switch viewing angles, if necessary, to allow you to see all components of the move. The system also gives feedback based on the Wii Fit Board tracking your movements. This helps you see where you need work. In addition, you can make a favorites list of all your preferred activities.

You can choose the type of workout you would like. Strength training and Yoga are two options you may want to explore. Strength activities include push-ups, extensions, arm stands, and leg lifts. Yoga positions that can be practiced include triangle, downward-facing dog, and shoulder stands. Deep breathing exercises and dance are also available.

Another area that is available on the Wii Fit program is balance training. Through various activities, you can improve and practice your balance. Some activities include ski and snowboard activities, tightrope walking, and lotus focus. In the last, you must stay still while looking at a flame.

Another feature that is great for those trying to get in shape is the aerobics exercises. These are essential for a good regimen. The choices include Hula Hoop, jogging, and step aerobics. With this many choices, you may never have to go to a gym again!!

Nintendo clearly took a clue from all the gaming detractors who complain that gaming is one factor that contributes to increasing obesity throughout the western world. By making exercise fun and simple, this game has opened up a new market in the console industry. It can truly be like a home gym. Even better, you get the choice of having a personal trainer on the cheap, if the highly structured work out is what you need. However, you can also choose to go the less structured route and simply enjoy the various activities on your own. Either way this is a great way to get in shape at home!
